  1. This is the oddest thing, my mom's computer can no longer surf the internet. Her modem seems to dial up just fine, and it even connects to the server, but IE nor Firefox will bring up any webpages.

However, CallWave (an online answering machine) connects just fine, and is able to download files.

I tried restoring her machine to an earlier date, but that didn't help. She also says that she's downloaded nothing in the past few days. I also tried turning off the firewalls.

Any idea what might be wrong? Thanks!

What is the error when trying to access a webpage? Are you using something like AOL or a local ISP?

If it was just with IE, I would say the security settings are wrong. But not likely with two browsers.

It sounds like a software problem. You could delete your Network connection (But note the settings first) and make a new network connection.

The only other thing I can think of is to uninstall your modem drivers and re-install the software. But the modem seems to be working properly. I would try this last

  3. Thanks for the help, I'll try your ideas out. Anyways, to answer your questions:

The ISP is a local one, but it works on my father's PC, so I'm pretty sure it's not the ISP. I even tried 3 or 4 different numbers.

As for the error, I'll go double check, but I think it's just the standard 404, where the webpage times out. IE and Firefox will search for it for awile, but since it doesn't seem to be getting a response, it'll go to the 404 page.

  4. Good news! I got it working!

What I tried doing was use the Windows Connection Wizard, and set-up a connection that way. Surprisingly, it worked, while my ISP's dialer still doesn't. Very weird.

    Anyways, thanks for the help!
