  1. Hi

I have been converting using virtual dub, tmpengc, and tmpgenc dvd author.

The quality is pretty good but I often find that on my two standalone dvd players the playback is jerky in that it plays, stops for a few seconds and then starts again which is quite annoying.

Is there a recommended speed that I should be writing to or do you think it may be something else.

    Thanks

Does the burned dvd work fine on your computer?
Have you tried any other converters?
Have you tried different media? Some crappy media may cause bad playback.
What is the video source framerate?
Are you converting to same framerate?
Changing framerate often cause jerky playback.

  3. Yes, it works fine on my pc. I have used different media and still have the same problem.

Not sure about the framerate as I don't really know anything about that.

  4. Since you have tried different media, it is probably something else.

Since you have given absolutely no information about source type, conversion methodology, or anything else for that matter I have no clue what exactly your problem might be, and not even enough information to make a wild guess.

First, do some reading and learn what framerate, bitrate, audio types, and a few dozen other things are, then come back and provide at least a minimal explanation of what you are doing, and your source type, then your problem will most likely be solved.

  5. Hope this helps.

It is an avi file. Bit rate 56kbps. Frame rate 14 frames/seconds.

    Video sample size 24bit.

I am encoding with tmpgenc and using the wizard to convert it to DVD and converting to PAL. Aspect ration 1.1, non interlace, 2 pass VBR.

I am fairly new to this so please be patient.

    Thanks

That is a pretty low res, poor quality source file. You really can't expect to get much more that jerky poor quality back from it. For example, if you produce a PAL DVD compliant mpeg, 11 froms have to be created from the 14 contained in every 1 secodn of footage. That means almost half the playback froms will be duplicates, and the results will be jerky motion. This is without going into the fact that this is 56kbps source.

What is the resolution ? Use g-spot to tell you these things as it will give you more and better information than just the file properties.

But honestly, if you want decent output, use decent source.

  7. It would be very difficult to get anything BUT jerky playback and low-quality video from such a file.

You note that you have TMPGEnc set to "Non-Interlace." I was having a problem with "jerky" playback from DVDs I was making, until I made sure that TMPGEnc was set to "Interlaced" and "Frame A First" (I'm paraphrasing - I don't have it open in front of me). After I made that change, it played back smooth as silk.
