Here's a scan of some TYGO3(Taiyo Yuden 16x -R) media burned at 16X on a Nec3520. I think most will agree that TY media is superior to Ritek, and I have heard bad things about Ritek's 16X media, but have tried none myself. 16X media burnt at 16X does not give as nice a PI/PO scan as 8X though, but IMO that will improve with firmware updates.

    For reference here's a TYG02(Taiyo Yuden 8X -R) scan burnt at 8X on a Plextor 716.

    I stick with TY always.

Prices have dropped enough that I can afford the best for any project, why not.

I always used to use nothing but Ritek G04 media until the quality started to go downhill around the time they bought out the G05. Not trusting 'new' media, I went with the advice of everyone on here and the digitalfaq.com sie. I tried both MCC and Taiyo Yuden and got around a 50% failure rate. Even dropping a project size to below 4GB on TYG02 media resulted in jumping and freezing right at the very end. This with guaranteed genuine TY not fakes

Replaced an almost new NEC 3520A with a brand new Pioneer DVR 109 and still the same results. Bought some Ritek G05 and haven't had a single failure in over 100 burns.

I have burned many 100s of TY and MCC on both NECs and Pioneers and 3 other drive brands and I have never had anything but top quality burns. Something is very wrong with your experience, but it would be hard to blame TY and MCC.
Still a few bugs in the system...

That has to be the understatement of the year. Its like saying I think Mother Teresa was nicer than Adolf Hitler.

I couldn't agree more with Chaz's statement. Check for problems elsewhere, and are you SURE they're genuine Ty's ?

Thanks a lot simple concise.. thanks!

one last thing, what are acceptable PI/PO errors? Do they result in skips or artifacts on the movie?

Normally I would agree totally but I'm only passing on what I found. I edit my projects in Ulead Mediastudio Pro and author with Ulead DVD Workshop 2. I create an iso file and then burn copies from that using DVD Decrypter. This is the method I have always used. I had replaced an ageing Pioneer A05 with the NEC 3520A and started to find that my test burns weren't that reliable. I tried Verbatim branded TY's to test and these seemed OK but are no good to me as I need inkjet printable media. Tried the MCC and had loads of failures so tried the TYG02 and no different. By failures, I mean skipping right at the end. I tried re-authoring to get the finished size down, even dropping it to below 4 GB, but still the same problem.

I have never managed to get any sense out of scans, my Liteon DVD ROM drive doesn't like doing them for some reason and the results are inconsistent. I could scan a disc and get a good scan, then scan the same disc and get a bad one. I just play them back and see if the work!

Thinking that maybe the NEC drive was to blame, I replaced it with a Pioneer 109 and got exactly the same results. Changing to Ritek G05 and I've not had a single problem. This is burning the original 4.3 GB iso file with DVD Decryter still. So far I have supplied 86 copies of that project and not had a single one back because it won't play on a standalone.

I don't know the reason, but I'm afraid that, for me at any rate, Ritek media works far better than TY's even though they are half the price.
