  2. Boot to your XP cd and have Windows reformat and install. Be sure to back up any files you want to keep to CD or another drive.

    Whatever you do, don't type
    c:\format /y

    :P

Anyway, what are you hoping to do? If you want to change the filesystem, there's a utility to do that without re-installing.
If you want a "clean" install, your can do that on another partition.

Is there a particular problem that you are having?

That's the way I'd recommend too.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm going to assume you made no major hardware changes recently and everything was working properly. If not, the hardware changes may have caused the problem.

But...........For getting into the BIOS screens:

When your machine first boots, you generally tap the 'Delete' key to get into BIOS. If you look on your first boot screen, it will tell you what key is needed. You motherboard manual should also have this info.

Generally the first item in BIOS is drive info. You should see if your drives are detected, etc. The detection is mostly automatic, so that is not generally where the problem is.

If you have went to all the trouble to reformat and re-install Windows with no changes for the better, the next step would be to clear your BIOS settings. I would make a record of the present settings first, though.

Then shut down the computer, unplug it and remove the BIOS battery for a couple of minutes. Then place it back in, plug the computer in and boot. That will get you back to factory default BIOS settings. You can also do this with a jumper on some MBs. You should have your motherboard manual handy if you want to do this to get your BIOS settings fine tuned after resetting them.

EDIT: Sorry, I misread. You haven't reformatted yet. You can still reset your BIOS as described if you can't seem to get anywhere otherwise.
