The male Smurfs (the main bread winners in the Smurf world) became disgusted with their employers when they begin shipping their jobs overseas. This led to a revolution of sorts when the male Smurfs decided, in protest, they would kill all of the female Smurfs so there was no chance of procreation, and therefore no domestic labor possiblilites for the future. This ultimately led to the demise of the local economy.

Because the Smurfs were facing certain death due to poor planning (no medicare, no social security, and a measurement system based on apples) they had no choice but to follow the utopian ideas of Poppa Smurf.

Although the Smurf kingdom appeared to be prospering on the outside, it didn't take a genius to realize that all was not well. Poppa Smurf was reaping the benefits of his new-found position of leader while the rest of the Smurfs lived in sqallor in makeshift mushroom houses.
