Hi im using a program called X Video Converter to convert a dvd .vob file to mpeg-1 and the program gives you a choice of different codecs to use with the new file. I was wondering what one is is a popular one and that will work with my dvd player because i used the default one which was a divx codec and i could only see black when it finished converting.

I also want to know if there is someone where i can go to find out exaclty what codecs I have on my PC.

IIWY, I wouldn't use that app. Also, you shouldn't use any codec besides the target (MPEG1).

Go with DVD2AVI (or whatever it's successor is) and then frameserve Virtualdub to TMPGEnc, for a high quality downconversion.

Or for more All-in-one approach, use DVD2SVCD.

Tmpgenc can probably load the VOB files directly and then encode to mpeg1. If not, you could load into virtualdub-mpeg and frameserve to Tmpgenc. The mpeg1 encoding in Tmpgenc is freeware.

Since you apparently want to end up with a VCD you can play on a settop player, you might look at this guide: https://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=ClassicalGuide.html

It uses VCDEasy and the freeware version of TMPGEnc encoder.

Go back to DVD Decrypter and re-rip, this time setting the VOB files to not split at all. Then continue with your processing/converting.

If you want DivX or XviD, I'd use AutoGK. Much easier.
    If in doubt, Google it.
