  1. Is there a problem with using all the disk space available to make a DVD? I've been told that it can cause problems because the end of the disk is more vulnerable.

Depends on the media. If you use Taiyo Yuden ( real ones ) you can utilize all the space without problems. The dye actually extends well beyond the recordable region. If you use junk like CMC coded stuff, Princo and the like you may not have that luxury

Staying below 4.0 GB (out of 4.3) seems to prevent skipping for me.

I go to about 4.2Gb with DVDShrink, though I've never had any problems with 4.37Gb with my DVDs. Losing that small amount of space on the disc is worth it to avoid any possibility of problems and the additional compression needed is not likely to be noticeable.

If your media brand was unknown or questionable, or you really don't want to take chances, I would go to 4.0Gb as davideck mentioned.

Memorex is a brand. They plaster it on different kinds and manufacturers discs. So one day, Memorex may be fine, the next batch bad. Only way to know, is to look at the manufacturer ID, which is hard, until you've bought it. For full info on manufacturers, take a look at www.nomorecoasters.com
Now, as I don't want to spend too much (neither money nor time) on my media, I stick to 4.2 GB when I encode a movie. I can just grab the cheapest media I find, and haven't had any problems. YMMV. If I had run a business doing DVD for others, I might be more interested in the q of the media I choose. As it is, I'm happy as long as my DVD player accepts what I shove in it.

Same here. Ty's are just a waste of money IMO. I buy what's on sale and haven't had any problems. Memorex has been quite reliable for me.

Many of us feel (rightly so if you ask me) that the best DVD-R media is Taiyo Yuden. I never use DVD+R media but I know that Taiyo Yuden also makes DVD+R discs and they are highly regarded though I don't know if they are the "best" of the DVD+R discs. However Taiyo Yuden is very clearly one of ... if not the ... best of the DVD-R discs.

Taiyo Yuden can be bought in "bulk" from a variety of websites. The most reliable ... IMHO ... is RIMA.COM

Also, historically, retail packages of FUJI that say MADE IN JAPAN are Taiyo Yuden discs with the FUJI label. FUJI packages that say MADE IN TAIWAN are NOT Taiyo Yuden and should be avoided.

I also will buy 10 packs of Panasonic DVD-R discs from time to time at BEST BUY if I am in a pinch and need some discs. The packaging says MADE IN JAPAN and they have always been Taiyo Yuden.

It is generally more expensive to buy retail than direct from a webiste such as RIMA.COM but sometimes you can get MADE IN JAPAN packages (with the Taiyo Yuden discs) of FUJI on sale. Otherwise it is cheaper to buy on-line.
