  1. An unsuccessful attempt at transferring files via direct cable connection between a Win98SE desktop and WinXP laptop has resulted in the laptop being unable to access ISP's via dialup.

AOL goes into a constant redial mode after the modems begin talking to each other.

AT&T Worldnet gives an error code of 720, indicating the laptop and Worldnet cannot agree on a protocol setting.

Since all diagnostics indicate the modem is functional, something I changed, deleted, or added during the cable-to-cable miscue is probably causing the problem. (And I made several I did NOT log--dumb move!)

I have googled on this error code and found numerous fixes, but none seem to work. I've reset TCP/IP, reloaded both AOL and AT&T Dialup Manager, doublechecked every setting I can find, all to no avail. I've run virus/spyware checkers on everything.

I've been on live chat AND telephone troubleshooting with both AOL and AT&T, but their fixes and suggestions don't work. I've sat with an IT professional who, after all his efforts were unsuccessful, suggested a reload of SP2 might solve the problem. Nope, didn't work.

In general terms, I'm beginning to think I've overlooked a step so basic that the fixes assume NO ONE would be so dumb as to have changed/deleted it, OR, it's a VERY deep-in-Windows-XP tweak I haven't been able to find yet.

This is my wife's laptop and she's beginning to doubt my abilities as far as computers. Since that's one of the very few positives I can offer her (my computer expertise), I'm in deep doo-doo if I don't fix this problem.

    Any ideas from anyone?

Does the connection work without the direct cable connection?

    Also, dump AOL.

You could try a restore point to before you attempted the file transfers. This method will retain the data files, however, but will restore the registry back to where it was before.

Get a cheap cd burner for the desktop and transfer the files via cd.
