I've gone through the tutorial, but can't get my settings right. What are the optimal settings for converting avi->DVD?

First, I'm converting avis to video_ts folders. The sources are 512x384, 624x352 and 608x336. Im selecting the source of the avi first, then selecting DVD ffmpeg. (Otherwise, with DVD selected first, it autoselects some other settings for the destination video) The first one I did was wtih mpeg2enc and the 624x352 source file. I am following the direction that say that DVDs are always 720x480, but the directions also say to select a size that is smaller or equal to the source, and the standard DVD size is always greater.

So I go in the video panel I set the autosize to DVD.. it is defaulted to Half DVD and it says 720x480 when it's set as half dvd, but if I change it to DVD, then back to half dvd, it changes to 352x480 for half dvd. Should I be using DVD or Half DVD? The first time, with the mpeg2enc I did not set the "Best" bitrate, so it encoded with 4000kbit/s.. And it took close to 12 hours according to the logs. The video was choppy in my home player (Toshiba Tivo Recorder)

Since then I have been using ffmpeg encoding and a 2990 ish bitrate or whatever is set by "best"... and the video & audio are still choppy on playback. For the audio, I am using the standard settings for DVD. 448kbit/s and 48000 Hz. Channels 5:1.

I also encoded a DVD with Toast 7, and this also took forever, but gave me perfect playblack. I would prefer to use ffmpeg because using toast ties up that application and I can't queue processes to go overnight. The settings I used in Toast were Encoding Automatic and Video QUality Better -- only two 43 min videos fit on a DVD tho. Has anyone used both of these methods and know how to mimic these Toast 7 settings in ffmpeg?

Also. I joined with DVD2OneX 4 video_ts folders from ffmpeg into another single Video_ts folder and burnt it as a DVD fine. I kept copies of the source video_ts folders and final mpegs, but deleted the two other files. the ac3 and mpv files. Now, when I try to just burn a single video_ts folder of those 4 videos, Toast 7 tells me they are encrypted!! But they are the orig. folders generated by ffmpeg. I can still burn other video_ts folders that werent joined... Is this something that DVD2OneX is doing? ... but the folders and VOB files still have their original modification dates!

Both should work, the latter will get smaller files and will look the same if your source has not a bigger size.

What you mean by choppy.. is it a regular pop in the movement, or something else?

Try to use the Demux tool on the VOB files.
