    Hi guys,

I have a matroska file which video track can’t be extracted as usual. It is supposed to be x264/avc encoded. When I first loaded it into mkvextract-gui, it asked me what should be the output format, because it was a new/unknown file type. I typed “avi”.

The question is… should I have typed “m4v”, and, if so, how can I arrange this, because at the second time, it didn’t ask me, I mean, mkvextract-gui keeps trying to extract an avi file.

Or, is it that mkvextract-gui does not support native avc encoded video tracks, as I have seen in this post
    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=277067&highlight=matroska

By the way, I have x264 codec installed, as well as recent ffdshow version (celtic_druid) and matroska pack. Not the latest versions, but recent enough to have already worked with an avi with x264 video encoded.

    Thanks in advance.

Extension should be .264. m4v is for raw MPEG4 part 2 streams, that is unless you are apple.

MKVWizard is just another gui, so if my matroska pack is not extracting, this gui will not, either. Unless I’m wrong about this Wizard…

Celtic_druid, how can I get to give the .264 extension, if mkvextract is no longer asking me what should be the output file type? Must I uninstall the matroska pack and start again?

    Thanks in advance.

You were right Baldrick. First it did not work, but when I installed the latest version of mkvtoolnix it did work at once just following this post you linked me to.
Mkvextract even did not ask me what the output file extension should be, it set it to .264 by istelsf.
    Thank you.

  6. matroska pack is for playback only, and has NOTHING to do with mkvtoolnix and mkvextract
