You should be happy with a Pioneer 109 or 110 burner.

My main reason for "upgading" to the 110 from the 109 is the unlocked ripping. Without a PC, one can't really unlock the ripping speed on the 109. You can crossflash to the A09 firmware, but the QuietDrive Utility, which needs to be run, can only be used from a PC. I originally had it done in a PC shop, but it cost $20! Then I sent the drive in to Pioneer for warranty work and they returned a new drive. I crossflashed it, but my ripping speeds have not reached the 12x speed. It seems stuck at about 5x. Since the 110D is costing me $39 shipped, it didn't seem smart to pay a shop $20 to crossflash again for me.

Just got a Lacie Porsche with a NEC ND-6650A (Slim EIDE)
Use it with Toast 7.
Very nice.

I waited too long and my internal just went in the shitter. Oh well, I knew it's days were numbered. So I was forced to buy something locally, which limited my selection. I went with The External Lacie ds with LightScribe. So far so good. I'm sure that with all the input I have recieved, that a Pioneer internal would have been a better choice but I have never had any patience so I went with a get it now purchase. I want to thank everyone for all of your input.
A picture is worth a thousand words, but a good camera is worth about a thousand bucks. -
LaCie packages anything from Pioneer to Nec and Sony. They don't make drive mechanisms. Which one you got?

I just connected the LaCie/NEC 3520AW Firewire drive I bought early this year to my new iMac (iSight) which has the Matshita DL Superdrive. Using LaCie's latest device profile I was surprised that iDVD 5 defaulted to the LaCie drive for direct burning and supported iDVD's DL capability. It seems that iDVD recognizes that I have a supported DL SuperDrive, but for some reason wants to burn to the Firewire LaCie drive instead.

Since everyone seems to be ganging up on Miksu I'll also chime in and say I love my NEC :P No probs at all so far and the price was fantastic (£40 from eBay, with a LaCie FW case). This is my 4th burner now so I'm hoping this NEC will last longer than the last three crappy Matshitas. Goddamn slot-loading rubbish, look great but break too often
