  1. I got some SVCDs and VCDs and I am having trouble playing them in one of my DVDs. I learned that the problem is how the discs were burnt. I already ripped, converted, a VCD successfully so it plays fine. How can I do the same with the SVCD mpg files? In another words, how can I rip the *.mpg file from a SVCD, convert it so I can play, then rerecord it. Thanks.

Well, one suggestion would be to get another DVD player ($79 apex ad-1500)
    else, try this:

    * get a copy of ISObuster and BUST the disk, and copy the .mpg file to you hd.
    * then, just do a plain copy to your CD in file mode not VCD/SVCD and burn
    that way. then,
    * see if the mpg file will play in your DVD player!
    * if you wanna go a step further, and it DOES play, then re-capture it and then
re-encode it to your liking. I do hope that the bitrate of the SVCD's are high
enough for good detail, else you'll notice some blocks and color issues.
I've actually done a re-capture of a capture I made and encode to SVCD at
2520. When I re-encoded this, it didn't come out as good as the first, but it
was acceptable for test purposes only.

My guess is that you borrowed some SVCD clips someone made and now you
want to play them but they don't play on your dvd player. Try the above out
and see if it worked. But, even if it does work, chances are, that your friend
encoded it with very low bitrate - I'm guess that these CDs are one movie
CDs which mean that they are way below 2520. So, good luck with this or
any other method that works for ya.

  3. I have the apex ad-1500, great player, plays everything (mpeg files on a data cd is great). I have another ROWA 3610, it plays all of the samples from this site just fine VCD, SVCD even the xSVCD.

Thanks for your reply. I know you can take the *.dat file from a VCD and convert it back to *.mpg and then record it again. I want to do the same thing for a SVCD that I have. Take the *.mpg and convert it to an *.MPG that will play and can be rerecorded. Thanks again for the reply.

Well, like I said in my above post.

    * if its an SVCD disk, then use my method above, and BUST it and then re-encode
    it.
    * if you have an SVCD mpg file on your harddrive, then just drag it into TMPG and
    then re-encode it.

    Its that simple! ...I think!
Just remember, the quality will NOT be a duplicate of the first, if you're re-encoding
from the SVCD file. re-encoding is NOT a pic-for-pic encode.

I think that this is how the anyligy works - but, I could be wrong/off.
Here's your encoding from AVI file, and all the letters repres. a picture:
    A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P

during the encoding process, these are the final pics for you SVCD:
    A C E G I K M O

NOW, you wanna re-encode the above SVCD again. ...oh no! but some
people just don't give a dam!
So, here is what is happening now and what is being re-encoded to SVCD:
    A E I M

R U starting to understand now, when people say that you WILL loose
quality?? when you re-encode an SVCD (or VCD 4 that matter)

    - - - OR - - -
maybe this is how it ANALYized:

I think that this is how the anyligy works - but, I could be wrong/off.
Here's your encoding from AVI file, and all the letters repres. a picture:
    A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P

After the COMPRESSION Algorithm takes place during the encoding process,
these are the final pics for you SVCD:
    A C E G I K M O

NOTE: the above, have ben COMPRESSed (color, etc)
NOW, you wanna re-encode the above SVCD again, after it's ben COMPRESSED
(quality has already ben lost here). ...oh no! but some people just don't
give a dam! So, here is what is happening now and what is being re-encoded
    from an ALLready COMPRESSed SVCD:
    A E I M

And, add to this issue. . . don't 4get, if you're also bumping down in resolution
or going up in resolution, you'll be adding to quality loss here too.

I hope that this (to the best of MY understanding) is finally clear to you
    all out there.

    Later.

  5. Yes I understand thanks, I really did not want to re-encode because off the loss in quality but ohwell. I can believe that once the mpg file has been burnt to the svcd that is stuck there and no going back unlike the vcd. Thanks for your help.

  6. hey, got it all working, all i did was just reburn the mpg file on the bad svcd on the new svcd and it plays great on both players. Also dont have to turn off that pbc to play on the apex. Thanks for your help, i dont know what was wrong with the original svcd but the mpg is fine.
