  1. I have some small DVD-Video segments in VOB that I want to put in a Powerpoint presentation. I'd like to convert the VOBs to WMV. How do I do this?

Convert to MPEG first. Then Windows Movie Maker should accept them and do a conversion to WMV.

jimmalenko, that shows how much I use WMM.

But here may be a useful tutorial for video and PowerPoint presentations:

Works on my machine. I can import MPEG2 clips from a Hauppauge PVR-250. It's very slow at the editing phase though.

Works for some people, not for others. I'd rather recommend the way that I know works rather than saying "try this; it may or may not work"

    Interesting ...

I was under the belief that you couldn't use MPEG-2 at all, from what I'd read.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q308464/

Note The MPEG2 format has several codecs that are not supported by Windows Movie Maker. Even if you have downloaded and installed these codecs on your computer, files in the MPEG2 format may not work in Windows Movie Maker or may cause other problems. Converting the MPEG2 format to another compatible format may work for most MPEG2 files. However, some MPEG2 codecs include copy protection schemes that will prevent you from converting the file.
Seems to say that it may or may not work
    If in doubt, Google it.

Maybe the problem was fixed with a service pack since the date of that KB entry (Jun 2004).

Dunno, don't think so. Not for me, anyway. I'm pretty up to date with patches etc and I tried it with a few DVDs within the last few months, but it didn't work.

Just out of interest, what MPEG-2 codecs have you got installed ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  9. Thanks for the great advice. I have downloaded VirtualDub-MPEG2 and WOW - it does exactly what I want. I had not come across it in my (extensive) searches here, so thanks for pointing it out.

EXCEPT that: I am getting some bad A/V sync issues. I have found the Audo Skew Correction menu item, but I wonder: is there an easier way to either (a) avoid sync problems in the first place or (b) adjust the skew more easily than trial and error.

    Thanks.

These don't really address the cause of sync loss but can correct some.

    SyncView and Hypercube Time Stretcher.

If you are cutting parts from MPEG videos, that can cause sync problems at times. If you are going to AVI, you might want to do that conversion before doing the editing.

Right now ffdshow's libavcodec is decoding MPEG2. I've also used the Intervideo MPEG2 video decoder that was installed with the Hauppauge drivers.

I'll try using ffdshow and libavcodec tonight when I get home from work. I've always just used the cyberlink one with PowerDVD, which has worked well for almost everything except this.
    If in doubt, Google it.
