  1. ***** UPDATE *****

Since posting the below item, I believe I found the issue. I had DirectVobSub v2.35 installed. So I tried installing 2.36 and was able to add some of my AVI files w/subs, but not all. Then I found an older version of DirectVobSub v2.33 and tried this one - it worked perfectly! It seems I can now import all AVI's w/external subs into TMPGEnc. Not sure why the newer versions are more problematic. Is this an issue with my system or do other people have this same problem?

    Original Post:

Since formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows, I haven't been able to import AVI files into TMPGEnc Plus v2.59.47.155 if they have an external subtitle file, such as .srt or .idx/.sub. In the past, this was never a problem. I now get the "File "C:\path\file.avi" can not open, or is unsupported" error.

I have read the sticky TMPGEnc Problems and Tips section on this forum regarding the above error and of course have set the DirectShow filter to highest priority in Environmental Settings. I am using DirectVobSub v2.35 (vsfilter) to display subtitles (I could use ffdshow as an alternative but they don't look nearly as good).

I have tested this on many of my AVI files (assorted divx, xvid, etc.) and always the files without external subs work perfectly, while the AVI's with an external srt or idx/sub do not. Has anyone heard of this problem? I believe I _might_ have been using an older version of DirectVobSub (2.21 perhaps??) in the past - could this be my problem? It seems strange that TMPGEnc would care whether or not there were external subs, since vsfilter is taking care of them.

Also, just to mention - When I give "AVI2(OpenDML) File Reader" highest priority in TMPGEnc's VFAPI plug-in tab, I am able to import the AVI files into TMPGEnc, but the subtitles don't display (DirectVobSub doesn't start)!! So this is not a possible workaround.

If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated. I have tried reinstalling TMPGEnc twice since this problem started occurring and am sure I have all proper codecs (video & audio) installed. I have no problems playing these files in Media Player Classic for example, and the subtitles always display perfectly. I have tried alternate programs that work so-so, but TMPGEnc has always been my favorite program for converting AVI's with subtitles, and it is quite frustrating that I cannot use it for this task anymore! Please help - thanks for a great site and forum.

    Matt.

Yes, I find this to be true. When using a latest version (v2.37) of vobsub external subs doesn't load into TMPGEnc. However, using a older version (v2.33) everything works fine again.
