I'm new to DVD disks and converting video's to .mpgs etc and transferring them to DVD's etc so sorry if i'm posting something that's easy.

I've converted a short video clip into an .mpg file, and given that my DVD player can play .mpg files I want to just copy it onto the DVD disk.

But I get an error message

"Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file"

Unfortunately I don't have a CD-/+RW disk to try to see if it's a problem with other disks or just DVD's.

Can anybody give me an idea of what's happening?

    Thanks

What are you using to burn with? Try some other burning tool like Nero Burning Rom, DeepBurner etc.
How big is the mpg file? If it is bigger than 2 gb you must choose udf burning mode.

    thanks Baldrick........

I've got Nero but for these transfers to .mpg i'm using Tevion DVD maker

The files vary in size....... and none work.

    185mb

    1.6gb

Is Tevion a good one to use? I use Nero but for different things. For the transfer from video to mpg i didn't like Nero and found Tevion much easier. Or maybe I was using the wrong part of the Nero pgm. I used Nero express for the trf mpg format to the typical DVD setup (which I take it discussion is under another thread in this forum)

I just want to copy over an .mpg file to the DVD

I just tried and I was able to use Nero to transfer the .mpg to a CD-R

any help would be really appreciated

    thanks

Hard to say what's going wrong - all you have to do is take any DVD writing capable app, and create a data DVD with your mpg files. Generally (if your system is ok) can't go wrong. If you get errors, post them back here exactly as they are (maybe even a screen shot).

  6. Since you have Nero use its "DVD-ROM (ISO)" template. Select "No Multisession". Drag your MPEG file(s) to the compilation window. Burn.

thanks for the offer - this time i tried with a DVD-R

i tried using Nerovision express 2, got as far as "creating menus and transcoding streams" ..... ie. it had already gone through the .mpgs and was then onto the next stage..... and then i got an error message that the compilation cannot be written on this type of disc etc etc..

it's below in the image.... (hopefully it's come across ..... if it doesn't then I'll try to fix it tomorrow.... i'm going to have to get away from the computer )

Ah - you're authoring with Nero - That's a different story completely. Sorry - I'm not much of a help then, as the only thing I ever use Nero for, is burning preprepared stuff (data or ISO images) to disc. Rarely.

  10. You are providing mixed information. In your first message you said your DVD player can play MPEG files. Now you are authoring a movie DVD.

Many players can play MPEG files off an ISO data DVD -- just like your computer can play MPEG files off your hard drive. When the DVD player finds such a DVD it gives you a quick text menu (like Windows explorer does) from which you can pick the file you want (some will just start playing the first file). Playing MPEG files is NOT part of the movie DVD spec. It's just something that's easy to add so some manufacturers do (especially the smaller companies). You can create this type of DVD using Nero Burning ROM as I instructed earlier.

Now you are using NVE to create a movie DVD. This is a special format that "normal" DVD players understand. It supports pretty menus, chapters, etc. Possible causes (in theory -- I don't use NVE much) of the error dialog you referenced in NVE:

Did you start with "Make DVD" or "Make CD"? You can't write Video CD content to a DVD or vice versa.

Did you insert a brand new DVD-R? You can't add another session to an existing DVD-R.

Did you insert a DVD-RW that was InCD formatted? NVE may not be able to erase the InCD format automatically.
