This is my scoop. I am editing hockey and baseball videos. Fast motion and changing scenes. All videos are avi's about 20 minutes being the longest, most are 10 to 12 minutes long.
I had the bitrate set too high apparently 2-pass vbr. One settop dvd player would play the dvde fine while the other was jerky. I lowered the bitrate to 8000 max. plays ok.
I have experimented with cQ, 2-pass vbr, and cbr. Cq definately has a final size difference. But I am not so worried about that.
    1) The faces on some of the players is a little blurry, how can I fix that?
    2) which of those( cbr ,cq or 2-pass vbr would you use for fast motion scenes. Any tips would be great.

I shoot and edit a lot of sports like what your doing. My preferance as far as TMPGenc are concered, are as follows:

CBR @ 8500 (or 8000 should be fine)
    GOP: 1 I frame, 4 P frames, 1 B frame.
    Intra DC set @ 10
Motion Search set @ High Quality.

Those are my preferances for good quality DV source.

No, I don't use any filters.

My DV source is pretty clean so filters would ruin the quality. Most of my edited games tend to be in the 15 - 20 minute range. File size is relativley unimportant, so I use CBR @ 8500 kb/s to get very good quality of my High Action/Panning/Zooming footage. The quality is quite good, almost undistinguishable frome DV source. I also use AC3 @ 224 kb/s, wich puts it well below the DVD standard for bitrate limit.

Just experiment to see what works best for you.

    Thanks,
I followed your settings, you definately saved me some time going cbr. Unfortunatly this perticular footage was 10 years old captured on a ancient camcorder by an inexperienced person who also found the special effects button put on a vhs tape . So I can only expect so much, believe me tons of degration. I have been digitilizing through my mini dv.
    Thanks a million.

Yes, I feel for you man............Many years ago I used to race motorcycles. The only footage I have are copies of copies of VHS Camcorder. Man I wish I had gotten into video back then!

My best advise I can give you is to capture to your Mini-dv camcorder and play with filters in Virtualdub to try to tweak the best you can out of what you have.

    Good luck.
