    can someone suggest some good mp4 video encoders?

    Think that most would agree that XviD is the best ASP MPEG-4 codec available. You didn't say if these mp4's were to contain MPEG-4 or AVC though. Also the audio should be aac or mp3? mp4 is just a container.

    Aac audio and mp4. what I am looking for is a program that is freeware and that will let me change a encoded mpeg1,2 or avi into an .mp4

  4. I don't know any free mp4 encoders but you can use Nero Recode.

    XviD is free it encodes to MPEG4 part2. faac is free it encodes to aac. GPAC, mpeg4ip, bento4, etc. are free tools for muxing.

    You can use a front end like MeGUI for encoding. If the avi contains XviD/DivX video then you don't need to convert it. Same goes for mp3 audio as well as I guess MPEG1/2.
