  1. Hi, i'm new in this site but i have often seen the excelent work you all do when someone asks for assistance, the tips and all the help you just give, well i thought you might be able to help me as well. The subject involves .mkv files as you assume.
I don't really mind using/watching mkvs but i want to watch them my way if you know what i mean.
What i want is to split these files starting in speciffic frames and ending in another ones too. To make the long story short, i want to remove the intro and outro scenes witch are reapeated in speciffic tv series. I want however to keep 1 intro and 1 outro from the bunch of files.
I'm really sorry that i just keep writting allot of stuff but i just want to offer as much info is possible.
I used to use vdubmod (v.1.5.10.1 build 2439) when all these new kinds of .mkvs started popping up. The kind of those that include not only multiple streams of sound and subs, but also subs in different format than .srt and some fonts to.

To overcome the problem i used GPEdit to isolate (remove) the fonts and unsupported by any player i know subs.

Then i used vdubmod to split the file where i wanted to but, and actually this is the problem, the picture gets allot "blocky" and image quallity looks like crap.

(Before i send you this full of problems topic i used the new version of vdubmod 1.5.10.2 wich says in the first opening that mkv files are now old and handlable, so i thought, ok, problems solved. Well they DIDN'T!)
If anyone can help please do, if anyone also knows a quicker way to do what it makes me about 10mins per episode to prepare please also speak.

I want to reffer to another mkv issue also that involves a whole movie in mkv format. If you manipulate this movie using gpedit in any way, the file from 700mb gets to consume 26GB (man it's HUGE i tell you). Why does this happen? I have red from other topics about mkvs that when messing with them, try to make them avi or other formats they get a little biger, but 25.3GB biger? That can't be right. Is it the fault of Nero Video Codec that it uses? It also contains 1 stream of AC3 sound, 3-4 subtitle stream (i can only play 1 of them with bsplayer pro) and 2 fonts.

One last thing that i actually observed yeasterday. When i try to split an ogm file and then rejoing parts of it that i had re-encoded with my xvid codec, it produces (the new file) a shaky picture thing effect. First time i've seen that happen, anyone knows anything? I used vdub 1.5.10.2 to split it, also the ogm video format is in xvid as you allready guessed. Bottom line is that some parts of the originall file are re-encoded and some others are not, i'm sure the problem lies in the compressor, i just can't still place it. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

I'd suggest using mkvmerge/mmg. You can only cut on keyframes though. Once you are done splitting it is actually possible with mkv to link the files so that they all reference the intro/outro and play the same as before.

  3. Sometimes i need to split in frames that aren't key-frames. (There i used to do a little encoding with vdub from no-key frame until the first key-frame.)
In anycase i'll try what you say, thanks man.

  4. I cought a glamse at what mkvmerge actually does and it wouldn't be of any use to me.You missundertood so it's my duty to rephraze the question.
I have one .mkv, i need to splitt it in frame 342 for example (which is by far NOT a keyframe btw) and make a new (1)file containing frames 0-342. Then REMOVE/ERASE/OMIT (whatever you want to call this action) frames 343-1056 (not keyframes also) and from 1057-24563 (not keyframes) i'll also make another (2)file. REMOVE 24564-25102 (not keyframes) and from 25103-27075 (guess what! NOT KEYFRAMES ALSO!!!) make a third and last (3)file. Then using one magicall program i need to join (1), (2) and (3) together which is something that mkvmerge actually CAN do, but what about the rest?. THAT IT!!! I'll be really ))) then.
Sorry for being direct and even rude, it's just that i HATE those new matroskas. Yeah yeah, i know all about how excellent a vessel for video streams and relative stuff are, however, NOONE SEEMS TO KNOW HOW THEY ACTUALLY WORK EXACTLY.
Well, this all the blundering you can get from me for now, i don't expect from someone to actually answer me in my questions, because noone actully know anything yet. I think i'll just reencode the whole bunch of these files into classic DivX5 and Ac3 or Mp3 and forget the whole thing.
