  1. Here's what I've been doing to convert an AVI into VOB:

    Starting with AVI (containing DIVX):

    1. Load into VirtualDub to demultiplex it into a vid AVI and WAV.
    2. In TMpgEnc, multiplex AVI-WAV into a MPG.
    3. Also in TMpgEnc, split MPG into an M2V and MP2 file.
    4. In IfoEdit, combine M2V-MP2 into VOB.
    5. Burn.

Is this kind of a dumb way of doing it? I see in the threads here that perhaps I should be using the DivxToDVD tool, but is it versatile enough to rely on for all AVI conversions?

A simpler way would be take the intact orignal avi and load it into tmpgenc to make a .mpg file. Then load that .mpg file into your favorite dvd authoring program. Assuming you make it dvd compliant you'll be ready to go. Tmpgenc will be able to read the audio from the avi - no need to seperate it.

VSO DivxtoDVD would be even simpler.

As for versatile enough for all AVI conversions.....no. But you specified a Divx AVI, which implies something you downloaded somewhere, and for the most part those are crap quality and hardly worthy of wasting a DVD blank on. But for people who don't mind using DVD blanks for stuff that is quality commensurate with what most people would reserve for CDR, then it's a great way to do a down and dirty conversion to play crappy downloaded movies on your set top player. It even does a decent enough job on PAL to NTSC conversions, fwiw.

  5. Well, my VirtualDub/TMpgEnc effort bombed -- I ascribe this to me cutting out the first couple of minutes in VirtualDub, which apparently messed up the audio/video sync.

I went ahead and tried VSO DivxtoDVD, and then I realized I had already registered the darn thing 3 months ago for just this purpose! Guess I need a swift kick in the rear. Now re-encoding with DivxtoDVD as I speak.

  6. There are several good and easy to use avi to vob programs. Go to the tools section and search AVI to DVD. There are many choices.

I use DIKO which will output the M2V and MP2 files or go further and give me the VTS which contains the vobs or go even further and burn a DVD using Decrypter.
