I have used a variety of encoding programs, DVD rendering programs, and DVD burning programs to try and eliminate this problem but I still keep running into it. I have several episodes of 24 that I am attempting to put on DVD. The original file format is .avi and the average specs for each file are as follows:
I use TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 to convert the file to .mpg with 29.97 fps for the DVD rendering program. I already changed the environmental settings in TMPGEnc for optimal results with XviD videos. The encoding process seems to be fine and the video plays perfectly on my PC (I use full screen (keep aspect ratio 2) when encoding). I have used both the older version of TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6 and the new version TSUNAMI-MPEG DVD Author PRO 2.1.4.71 to render the files for DVD. The files preview perfectly in the DVD authoring programs but when they are burned to DVD the sides of the video are cut off. The top and bottom appear to be normal but the sides are clearly being cut off.
What should I do to prevent this? This problem is especially frustrating since it previews just fine in the DVD rendering software but then gets cut off when played. I have played the DVD in two different DVD players (one a Sony DVP-NS500V and the other a Panasonic DVD-S55) on two different televisions (one is a 65" widescreen and the other a 27" television). The results are the same.
Thank you VERY much for any insights into this conundrum. I look forward to trying any suggestions presented to me!

My guess would be that you are dealing with a TV overscan issue. You're not going to see on your TV what you see on your computer monitor. It seems to me that I've read several guides about how to encode in tmpgenc (adding black borders to your encode, for example) that will provide a more reliable TV play-back. BUT, reading this might help.

It would seem that 24 Season 4 is available on pre-release:

... so unless you've captured these yourself, we're talking about warez. If in doubt, Google it. -
And if you did capture them yourself (assuming innocence until proven guilty, contrary to world wide government trends), you would not have seen this area in the original broadcast, as it would still have been hidden by overscan. In short, TV stations shoot these programs with overscan in mind, and you are not missing anything. Go and find something important to worry about instead.

Oh, yeah. Then therez that...

I guess I mis-labeled it. It should read 3x01. Must've fat-fingered it. ANYWAY...
It probably is an issue of overscan but the majority of articles in the forum concerning putting black bars around the border do so to both the top and bottom as well as the sides using virtual dub or something similar. I will check out the article on Doom9.
Thanks, NoFace!
