Finally got a good deal on a Pioneer 220. I plan to use it to convert all those VHS shots of the kiddies and vacations. If I got this right I'll use the 220 to creat a DVD-Video format disk. Take that to my PC and rip it with DVD Decrypter, take out all the shots of the sky, ground and people's butts using DVD Shrink, then burn to DVD using my Nero 6. Does it sound like I have this right? ANY suggestions, helpful hints, pointers to guides, etc are welcome. My burner is an NEC 3540a (good price at Newegg and updated Nero to boot)
Thanks, esp to GShelly who provided a lot of good info on this particular recorder,

    SD

    Salt,

As far as editing is concerned, I am pretty sure that DVD Shrink is not the tool for cutting the booty shots, etc Try something like Womble MPEG Video Wizard or VideoRedo for your edit needs.

Ditto. MVW is a great program! Once you try the trial download, you'll be convinced. Also, check out TMPGEnc DVD Author for your authoring needs.

    True.
    It sometimes causes sync issues.

I use MPEG Video Wizard and also TMPGEnc MPEG Editor. For most things that only involve simple cutting I prefer the TMPGEnc Editor since the preview window is much larger.

Also, there's really no reason to use Decrypter- you can just copy the files to your HD by dragging them in Windows. Or, you can use TMPGEnc Editor or TDA and extract from the disk and convert to mpeg at the same time.

You can also use TMPGEnc DVD Author to rip/convert VOB files from your disc to your hard drive as MPEG2.

No you cannot. There will be problems this way if the VOB was segment, which is likely the case. Extract from the IFO into a single file.

Good stuff folks. Thank you all for the input. You've given me some homework to do. Oh, do any of these recommendations change if I'm using Win98SE (FAT32)?
    Thanks,
