I beat Quake 1 in 1996 on my old 486 DX4 100MHZ, but didn’t find it as enjoyable as Doom. Quake 2 bored the hell out of me half way through, but I still completed it because I simply had nothing better to do back then (1998)

So, I don’t know if I should bother with Quake 4 all together, but I have a feeling that it will be a hell of a better game than its predecessors where, especially since Raven is behind it.
I can’t imagine how the creators of Heretic & Hexen series, could go wrong with this?
I don’t think the kick-ass atmosphere & movie-like story line, will be as cool as Doom 3 though. Let’s hope it has the same, old-school gameplay as Doom3.
[Spoilers Start]
I hate the fact that they revealed so many wow factors from the story-line; you get stroggified at some point but you’re saved by your buddies just before they implant the mind control chip into your skull & the final Boss is named Nexus, the source of the Strogg forces...
[Spoilers End]
Why do all the Gaming News sites spoil it every time.

Quake was, hands-down, way better than any other FPS of the time. The overall ambience of the game made it very intense. Not to mention, the kick ass NIN soundtrack that was later replaced in Quake 2 with bullshit guitar rock. Quake 3 was a pile of crap! Unless you enjoy online play only. I thought the decision to ditch the single player story mode was about the stupidest possible thing you could imagine. Quake is still a great game. Download the Quake for Windows .exe file sometime and give it another look (play it with the cd in... it's much better). Oh yeah, make sure you turn out the lights.

I may look into it. Will a Radeon 9250 be enough??
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
As long as you have above 64 megs on the Video Card you should be Fine...

Quake always felt like one of many wanna-be ID games of the time. Doom was sort of the monster/alien/violent upgrade to Wolfenstein. Everything else was just a clone. And most of them... all of them... are boring.

Nah. Quake was the first actual 3D FPS. W3D and Doom were ust cardboard cutouts (innovative, nonetheless). That's why they could be modded with smple BMPs.
-
But Quake was really a take off on doom. You can't have one without the other.
And yes DOOM was just really a modifed almost 3d version of wolf3d (which was 2d).

Doom has been call 2 1/2 -D because it uses the same technology as W3D, but multi tiered (you can go up stairs, elevators, etc.)
If you're going by any of them being a "take" on the other, remember that they were all made by the same company (and even person), so it's more like an evolution. -
Quake was a huge improvement over Doom or Wolfenstein. If not for gameplay, just the whole feel of the environments and sounds. Tack on the 3DFX support for it (from the Mid 90's) and it was pretty sweet for its time.

Doom was not based on the Wolf3D engine, as it was completely re-written, & was later on enhanced by Raven software for Heretic & Hexen. (The ability to fly, Look up & down, slightly better textures, etc...)
Hexen II was also based on the Quake 1 engine but it was one of the 1st true 3D games to utilize 3D Hardware acceleration support.
3DFX Glide & OpenGL only if you removed a certain file that forced the game to use Glide as the default API. -

Aren’t the gameplay, story line & in-game music cool like most other FPS made by Raven in the past?
Is the music epic like Heretic & Hexen or is it using that annoying Thrash-Metal soundtrack from Quake 2?
Or even worse, the bizarre disordering music from Quake 1?
Is Quake 4 Long like Unreal 1 & Quake 2?
These are the most important factors in my book rather than graphics.
How well will it play on medium to high details & 640x480, on a system like this?
P4 2.4GHZ FSB 400MHZ
768MB RDRAM (Rambus) 400MHZ
GFTi4200 128MB AGP 8X
Doom3 & ROE worked amazingly well at 45-60FPS with the above settings.
So what should I expect from Quake 4?
