odd Color and distortion with .wmv files

I recently re-formatted my HD, however, after re-installing XP and updates, it seems I'm missing a codec somewhere. It won't play correctly with WMP, Divx, ATI or any other player I've used. The files used to play in WMP just fine so can someone tell me what might have happened?

The color has the same effect of looking at a colorful negative photogragh (faces Blue, hair stark orange, etc...) and blocky distortion.

Well the wmv decoders come from Microsoft since it is their format. ffdshow supports decoding some versions though. Blue faces sounds like the UV is swapped for some reason.

You could try mplayer and see how it looks. Still uses MS decoders for some stuff.
