Can anyone help out with this problem:-

A family friend has purchased a Sony Vaio Laptop PCG_FX701 secondhand. In fact this was purchased a few months ago, but he has run into some problems. Where he bought it from is no longer around, and he has no restore disk nor a CD writer fitted.

The operating system is not the problem. He has a Windows sticker, legitimate, I can install this for him.

    The problem is the drivers.

The chipset is VIA. Plus AC97 Audi, realtek Netowrking and a Conexant-AmbitŪ SoftK56 DataFax Modem. The graphic is ATI mobility.

I have downloaded the ATI driver, and Realtek, from Sony, but as for the rest - well. Is the VIA chipset the standard from VIA or is it a Sony derivitive.

Can anyone help with drivers for this laptop. THe Sony site is no help really. Perhaps they could post the drivers for me. I dont care about the Sony software at, just the drivers.

    Thanks.

From my experiemce with Sony, they (generally) only provide drivers for original OS.

I searched for that model, and Sony doesn't list a PCG-FX701. I was able to come up with a FX677, FX776, and FX777. I think Via has a generic 4-in-1 utility for their chipsets. I did come across the modem driver for you, PM me with your email and I'll send it to you. Also, if you know how to find the Hardware ID for the chipset, send the PCI string and I'll get the driver for you. If you need help with finding it, tell me in the PM and I'll show you how to do it.

Go to the Sony support website.

Find you model and follow their directions. VAIO notebooks have unique drivers and order of installation can be important.

Thanks. I am based in the UK and the 701 is a UK VAIO.

I think it is probably best to contact Sony and purchase a recovery set.
