I'd like to run the output of my MP3 player (headphones) to the input of my stereo receiver (line audio). They sell FM transmitters, but the one I tried didn't work well at all. I've tried running a direct cable and that was even worse. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

That should work fine as long as the mp3 player volume is not up too high...
My son does the same with his IRiver and it works great.
    Was it distorted or what?

Radio Shack sells an adapter made by Monster Cable for this purpose.

Yes, even if phones out isn't intended for line in, it usually works. "Even worse" how?

  5. mp3 players work well with computer speakers just pull out the line put it into your mp3, or buy one for your mp3 player

Thanks for the replies. Yes, it does "work" going directly from the headphone out to line in. However, you have to really crank up the volume (on both the mp3 player and stereo receiver) and the resulting sound is rather "hollow or tinny" for want of a better description--it just doesn't sound good. I also have a cassette adapter which actually works quite well in my car system. Again, thanks.

Sounds odd, as the levels for line in is lower than generally phones output, AFAIK.
Maybe some impedance mismatch is giving you the problems. Not much to do about it then.
I've had a number of portable CD players in the past with both phones and line out - a pity MP3 player manufacturers hasn't adopted that feature.
