Convert AVI to VCD (DAT) and MPG to VCD (DAT)

Is there a simple program that allows me to convert my downloaded mpg music videos into a vcd format (I think vcds are DAT files - correct me if I am wrong)

I am trying to play my music videos I download from computer in my dvd player!

nero burning rom or nerovision express, select vcd and add the avi,mpg.
or
convert with tmpgenc and author to a vcd with vcdeasy.

What is the difference between converting from mpg and avi to vcd
as opposed to converting mpg and avi to dvd?

the latter wouldnt give a better picture quality would it? I assume it just give it more storing capacity (nothing on the resolution)

Does nero convert MPG to DVD format? TMPEgc doesnt convert mpg to dvd, only avi to dvd.

If the source* is:
~320x240/<2000kbps/<60min then make a VCD.
~640x480/>2000kbps/>60min then make a DVD.
*If the source looks bad then the end result will also,increasing the resolution will not improve the picture.

TMPGEnc can only encode AVI/MPEG->MPEG...you need TDA to author.NeroVision Express will encode and author a VCD,SVCD or DVD.

Can I use Nero Burning ROM to select dvd and add my mpg, avi files? I never knew that Nero can do the conversion from mpg to dvd format. I know it can burn mpg onto a dvd-r or dvd+r (data disc), but doing that will NOT allow me to view my burned files on a dvd player on a tv or car.

Will Nero only allow me to convert mpg to vcd format? I hope to convert to dvd so that I can fit more of these 50 mb music video (mpg files) onto a 4.7 gig disc instead!

By the way, what is dvd format? I know vcd is DAT format. Someone said you can probably just change the ".mpg" to ".dat" and burn it without having to convert in nero....dont know if that is true.
