  1. My friend had a 200gb Maxtor harddrive installed on his pc, it failed so its on its way back to them under warranty.Ive bought a replacement, the same size and model Maxtor drive.Ive instaled it exactly the same way as the old came out.Changed the boot sequence to boot from cdrom and WinXp goes through its hardware checks and asks if i want a fresh install or a repair. So i pick fresh install but it cant find a harddrive installed.
Is there any reason it cant find the harddrive?.
    Please help.

Did you set the jumper correctly on the hard drive? If it's not set correctly it won't be detected. You could also check your BIOS to see if it's being recognized in there.

If it's a SATA drive and you are trying to use it as a boot drive, make sure there are no PATA (IDE) hard drives on line at the same time. The OS and the BIOS seem to like to default to a PATA drive for boot and this makes the SATA hard for the MB to detect. I've had that battle before.

If you continue to get nowhere, try clearing your BIOS by pulling the battery for a few minutes and then try it. (Make a note of your custom BIOS settings, as they will be lost.)

  5. For a new hard drive, you must first Fdisk otherwise it will not show. when you put in new drive it must show in bios post , then you must fdisk after that must format it. If you are installing Windows it will format. Maxtor should have a setup disc use that it is easier.

When you put in your XP DISC you would need to HIT F6 to load the SATA drivers so you can use that SATA HD to boot from. You would need to copy the SATA DRIVERS from your motherboard cd to a floppy disc.

Did you turn the SATA port On in BIOS? On both of my Dells at work I had to go into the BIOS and actually turn the ports on for it to recognize the drive. I'm not familiar with your board, but you may have to do that.
