I am new to the "authoring" of my own DVDs. I am looking for some programs that will allow me to rip certain scenes from a disc as I am trying to create a compilation. I have been using DVDShrink, but find it a bit clumsy for the following couple of reasons:

    1. When the disc is done ripping, DVDShrink wants to burn right away. I usually need more data off the same disc and have to re-insert the disc and let Windows re-load it...I hate waiting!

    2. While selecting the edit times in the DVDShrink, it doesn't exactly let me edit frame by frame, which I really want to do. Sometimes it is close enough, other times it's not close at all between one scene and the next.

    3. I have to open a completely seperate program to run the DVD on 1st so that I can see the running time on the disc to edit. DVDShrink's built-in player would be great if it had it's own time index.

Are there any other comparable programs out there that will let me do what I need? Are there some settings within DVDShrink that will allow me to "tune" it to do the things I want?

    Hi lockheede,

    Welcome to the forums.

    1) Rip with DVDDecrypter. It doesn't do burning and is, in my experience, far more reliable. If you do get problems, try SmartRipper - yes, it might be a bit older but it tends to do the job when DVDDecrypter doesn't and vice versa. I've never had much luck with rippring with DVDShrink.

    2) You won't be able to edit at frame level in DVDShrink, or most other apps, as the footage is in MPEG2 format and you can only edit on keyframes which occur up to every 15 frames for PAL, and 18 frames for NTSC.

Look into MPEG Video Wizard or VideoReDO - I believe at least one of these, maybe both, can edit at frame level on MPEG's.

    3) No suggestions. Maybe someone else?

    Hope that helps some...
