You know, that feature where your comouter is off, but when you hit any key or touch the mouse it turns on.

Just installed Windows 2000. Works fine then I plug in my Windows 98SE hard drive. Does not work in Windows 2000. What should I check?

I am also unsure as to exactly what this feature is named.

I think you are referring to 'Power on by keyboard or mouse'. There should be a setting in your BIOS to select that. Some motherboards also have a jumper that has to be set. Some will also work with a USB keyboard or mouse. Refer to your motherboard manual to see if you have this option and what you need to do to enable it.

"Does not work" ...... how ?

To take a blind stab in the dark, I'd say that you've got the Master/Slave configs wrong either by jumper on the hard drive and/or in the BIOS. That's the best my crystal ball can do, I'm afraid ....
    If in doubt, Google it.

OK, now that I have had another day to play with it.... it does work, it's the shutdown part that doesn't. When I shutdown it doesn't completely shut down, it gives me that windows sayung that it's OK to shut the power off, then I have to manually hit the power button. So presumably it's some other setting someplace. (not BIOS, in Windows).

I'm pretty sure the auto-shutdown is actually a feature of your motherboard / power supply, and it sounds like yours doesn't support it.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Check the MS site for 'Windows shutdown problems' or Google it. I have gotten an install messed up enough to get that even with XP. For me it was an OS problem.

I'm going with Jimmy on this one. More than likely your motherboard supports the power off, but your power supply doesn't which is why you have to manually turn it off. if you have to manually turn it off then you have to manually turn it on. Quite a few pre-built systems are like this. However power supplies are the most easily replaced component and are relatively cheap.

My mothrboard does support it, or else it wouldn't work in Windows 98SE!

Will look into shutdown problems (since there are so many known ones).

Aaaah, the old chestnut of only supplying the absolute minimum of information, then letting the kind souls who are trying to help guess all the details ... then berating them when they're wrong

I'm surprised that you haven't been here long enough to have googled it before you posted the thread, but that's just me ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

My first post mentions that it works fine in Windows 98SE.

I did, but when I googled I was looking for a startup problem, not a shutdown one. That and I had no good terms to look for (the exactly what to search for terms was a problem).

Might be a moot point since my modem doesn't work good in Windows 2000 anyway. Will try a different one sometime.

In my observation search engines are only good for those who can pare info down to the bare essentials and come up with multiple ways of searching for the same thing using different terminology. Some people are naturals for search engines. I'm one of them. Others couldn't find anything when performing the same search. Forum searches are the worst IMO.

    Where ???

I read that as it works fine in Windows 200 until you plug in your 98SE hard drive and then it doesn't work. No mention of it ever working under win98 there for mine.

    Oh well ... <shrug>
    If in doubt, Google it.

I went to annoyances.org and figured out how to make it work. Also put in my backup modem and it works fine in Windows 2000. Now if I can only get my good modem to work in Windows 2000 and turn off unnecessary services, etc. then I'll be fine.
