  1. Hi,

I was wondering if there was a difference, from say a video cd format and a .mpg format that you download online? The reason I am asking is because I am looking into a navigation and dvd player for the car. But for some reason, most salespeople do NOT know if it will run video cds (they know region 1 and region 0 dvds will work, but not sure on video cds) I noticed that the file of the video cds I have say "mpeg" but the .mpg music videos that I download are "mpg"

Weird thing is that when I pop the video cd into my home dvd player, it plays fine. If I pop my burned "mpg" music video into the home dvd player, it will not play - only works on computer (even though they are both mpg) Is there a conversion I have to do for the video mpeg format?

But shouldnt the vcd be able to run in the cd player? Here is the link to the player I am talking about. It has both cd and dvd. The vcd should be able to run in the cd player and display the music videos?

not sure why no one knows if vcds can work on this deck

mpeg is a compression format. It is capable of being encoded at many different resolutions and bitrates. VCD and DVD describe standardised ways of presening video and audio information that is encoded to the mpeg standard, but at specific resolutions and bitrates. Check out What is DVD and What is VCD (top of the menu, to your left) to see what these are for you format.

Some standalone players are capable of playing back raw mpeg files (that is, mpeg files that have not been authored to DVD or VCD standard) which may or may not be to the same specs as VCD or DVD files. Similarly, some will also play back mpeg4 encoded files, usually in either Divx ot Xvid standard. These are not part of the DVD specification, so there is no directive that a player be able to playback these files. The same for raw mpeg files.

Most standalone players can play VCD 2.0 disks. Look at something like VCDEasy for converting your downloaded mpeg file into a VCD to test it out. There is nothing in the specs or the format logos that would indicate that it will play VCDs, hence the confusion.

If VCD proves to be a problem, you can always author VCD cimpliant video to DVD and play it anyway. The only difference is the sample rate of the audio - VCD is 44.1, DVD is 48.

You could also take your VCD mpegs and then use TMPGENC DVD Author to make them into a DVD that will play no problem on any player.

  4. But why would a navigation/dvd deck play region 1 dvds BUT not play vcds? It's not like vcds are coded. All my home dvd players, if it plays dvds, it plays vcds as well. Are car audio decks that much different?

  6. TMPENC doesn't convert MPG to DVD, it only does AVI to DVD I think - plus its too complicated to use.

Does anyone know if NERO has an option to convert MPG and AVI to a DVD format? or only vcd format?

I hope its something as easy as select "dvd" and add my music videos and burn.?
