  1. Ok, got a few seemingly minor problems(but i've been wrong in the past).

I have had my modem installed since I built my PC, with no problems. Then randomly I was downloading the newest version of AIM from their website, and I get this error saying that there is a problem w/ my U.S. Robotics 56k modem and it has to shut down. So I didn't get AIM downloaded. So then after that, my modem is not being recognized by 'control center'(prog that came w/ the modem, detects the modem). So I went to device manager, looked under modems and hit query modem. It came back saying error or some crap, basically saying there isn't a modem.

The modem hasn't been touched, it is securly in place. The only thing I can think that is causing this is the LAN drivers that I installed. Redwudz knows about these, as he gave them to me, as they are official files from the MOBO or something. Basically, files I need...I think. Anyways, it only seems to do it when I try to download AIM(from aim.com), tried twice, same error both times. However, whenever I restart the computer, it comes back and works fine.

One other thing, on bootup, as soon as I get to the my desktop I get "EAccess Violation", is this related? I googled EAccess Violation and have decided that I am possibly getting this error because my CD-ROM drive is dying. This is the original CD-ROM drive that came w/ my first PC(2002), so i'm hoping that's all it is. I have been trying to run discs from that drive and am getting errors, so I think that may be it. Anyone know anything about it?

EAccess Violation can be caused by lots of things. Can you post the full text of the error? It should be followed by a 'module' name that points to the offending program. CD ROM drives are not a usual cause. It's generally a software/process problem.

When you get the EAccess violation, does it have the word 'dep' in it?
If so try changing the DEP settings in include AIM. Look here for instructions: http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_tips566.html

The LAN drivers shouldn't have any effect or do anything unless you have a CAT5 Ethernet cable plugged in and you are on a network.

From what I understand the modem works OK for everything but downloading AIM? Is this just a upgrade to AIM and you have been running an older version of AIM before on this setup? Or has AIM never been run? I don't use AIM or AOL so I'm not really knowledgeable about either.

  3. I get the EAccess Violation everytime I first turn the PC on. As soon as I get to the desktop it pops up. I've determined the drives work fines, it's not them. There is no extra information w/ the error. It just pops up, I click ok, and it's gone. No other problems w/ that I don't think. Here is a link to a picture of the exact error i'm getting...

    http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/3/web/363000-363999/363024_92_full.jpg

The modem is a big deal though. I found out it has nothing to do w/ AIM. I don't have AIM installed and it did it again on me earlier and I was just browsing this site. It just says there is a problem w/ the modem and it must close. And gives me the option to send an error report. I will get a pic of it next time it happens. The weird thing is, if I restart the PC, when it comes back on, the modem will work fine, it will be detected, it'll dial on the internet. But then about 30 mins later, it fails. I went all through the windows troubleshooting guides and the best idea I got from it was to unintall and reinstall the modem...

Notice the critical error notepad icon on my desktop. That's a critical error windows popped up(offline) whenever I tried to play a game. The game booted up and ran flawlessly and still does, as do all my games, but it gave me that error just that once, and hasn't since. Here's what it said exactly...

"OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600)
CPU: AuthenticAMD Unknown processor @ 1811 MHz with 1023MB RAM
    Video: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (7184)

    Assertion failed: RenDev [File:\Data Manager\Version\Local\WinDrv\Src\WinViewport.cpp] [Line: 471]

    History: UWindowsViewport::OpenWindow <- UGameEngine::Init <- InitEngine"

I really am sorry for all the questions, but for every question I have, it's another headache for me.

I'd appreciate any help that could be given.

    Thanks!

    Interesting problems.

For the modem, you could try unistalling the modem driver from the control panel, then let Windows replace it with the generic Windows modem driver, not the USR one. Next, if no luck. Pull the modem and boot, then put it back and boot again and let Windows find it and the drivers. The Windows drivers should work fine. The USR drivers may just have some added features that you may not need for anything anyway.

The other problem may be unrelated. The game problem may be related to DEP. You can always place the game in the exempted list in DEP.

That popup 'Eaccess violation' doesn't have enough info to pinpoint the source of the problem. Unless it's something to do with an Electronic Arts game and I've been looking in the wrong places.

  5. Uninstalled the driver and everything is working fine now. EAccess Violation is gone too. Must have been access restriction to the Modem? I dunno, anyways, all is good...even got AIM downloaded.

    Thanks again!!!

Sounds good. Maybe some program was trying to take a roundabout track to your modem. Or may have been a game program trying to call home. Make sure your antispyware/antivirus is up to date.

  7. Yeah, antispyware is all up to date. Let me ask you a few simple questions, not problems, just curious...

How do I set Num Lock to be on when the PC boots, I have it enabled in BIOS but it's never on whenever it boots. I tried disabling it as well, no dice. Weird...

Where can I download a program to stop and start the startup programs on bootup. I had one called System Security Suite 1.04 on my old PC, but can't find it on download.com.

Also, do you guys usually turn your PS off whenever you turn off your PC, or just leave it on? Cause the MOBO stays on whenever the PS is on...

    Thanks

Generally you just use the NumLock key on the KB and as long as you don't turn it off there, it always stays on, even after reboots. When you first install the OS, it is usually off.

Typing MSconfig in 'Run' will shut off and manage startup files. There are other programs available, but I rarely use any. It's really for diagnostics.
If you are using it to disable programs when capturing, I've never found that necessary as long as your computer is fast enough and has sufficient memory.

When you shut off most newer computers, the PS still supplies a small amount of power to the RAM and motherboard. If you plan to remove cards or memory, best to unplug the computer.

Some motherboards have a LED to warn you there is still power on. It's used for 'suspend to ram' or some other power modes. Also for 'Wake from keyboard or mouse'. It draws only a tiny amount of power from the PS when inactive.

Most PSs can supply up to 1/2Amp for STR or KB or mouse MB waking. Your MB manual may have more information on this.

  9. I ran MSconfig and disabled the programs I wanted to disable on startup(just like Asus Probe, Asus Doctor, and some other prog) anyways, nothing needed to run the computer and I get this message...

"You have used the System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows starts.

The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing
this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Windows Starts.

Choose Normal Startup mode on the General tab to start Windows normally and undo the changes
you made using the System Configuration Utility.

*with a checkbox next to this message* Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start:"

Then I can click OK and it brings MSconfig back up and has is it in diagnostics mode. So I click 'normal startup' and all the programs I don't want to run are enabled again...

Yes, MSconfig is a diagnostic program to locate startup problems. If you don't want those programs to run at startup, remove them from the startup folder or uninstall them if you want to permanently eliminate them.

EDIT: I have Asus Probe, but it doesn't run at startup. May be the way it was installed. It should show in the startup folder if it is set up that way.

In addition to what redwudz said, do the same thing you did with msconfig, but after the reboot check the box. Like he said, that's a diagnostic utility, used for (among many other things) tracing the cause of a Blue Screen of Death after login, usually from (just an exmple) some program designed to run on Windows 95, 3.1 ,etc that accesses hardware directly, a corrupt Symantec upgrade, etc If you like the way it looks, check the box and you're done.
