Hey, I have been wondering something, I recently got a computer from a friend of my mom, i got it because there was a lot of viruses, and best buy said that it couldnt be fixed, but alas, i fixed it, so its mine now. Now, I want to get online with it, but its in a different room than the cable modem, on a different floor of the house, actually. I have a wireless router that my dad had purchased for his laptop, so i could get a wireless card, but i dont have any money right now, so i was wondering something. A friend of mine has an extra cable modem, like the actual box the cable plugs in to and that plugs into the computer, and its the same one that i have. So, I was wondering, since i already have the cable internet service, and a modem, if i were to get the second modem, and plug that in upstairs, would that work? and if so, would i have to pay extra to use it? thanks.

The cable ISP has to know the MAC address of your cable modem before they can get it to work. Check with them to see how many connections you get with your current service. You just may be able to be up and running with a single phone call.

Look on the bottom of the cable modem you are wanting to hook up.....do NOT use the modem that is already hooked up and working. There should be a MAC address listed on a label. It will be 12 chararacters, 0 thru 9 and A thru F. Then you call the cable company and give them this number.
Since a cable connection is always on, they have to have some way to verify you are authorized to use cable internet service.

There may be an additional charge to your monthly statement depending on how many modems you can have active at once.

Not gonna work AFAIK. Cable company would only activate a single modem.

You'd be much better off getting a linksys or SMC wireless card with a wireless router and going that way.

I've never heard of 2 modems in a house, I doubt their system supports that.

I agree with you about the wireless router, flaystus, but bugs stated he couldn't afford a wireless nic at this time and wanted a solution to the modem he did have to use. A call to the cable company would verify if he could have 2 modems in one location.....some companies do support it.

    No.

Your only option is to start saving for a wireless card for your PC.
