Thanks to the input of the folks here, I've acquired a new JVC HR-S3901U VCR, a Sign Video detailer and an Elite BVP-4.

These are the first hardware video processors I've owned, having previously stuck completely to software work, so I've a basic method question for you experienced folks. I presume, given the large number of folks who favor standalone DVD recorders, that most pretty much do one way or another settle on one set of adjustments per tape. However, do you play your tape just long enough to make adjustments, then rewind and capture with those settings or do you play a tape entirely through to see how your adjustment affects the entire tape before capturing?

For me, it depends on what's on the tape. Dark scenes, high motion scenes or a lot of video noise all cause problems. If the video is low motion, well lit and clean, it's easy.

I usually check the video in several places and make my initial adjustments to get a good compromise. It helps to have a regular TV monitor to view the adjusted video as a computer monitor will display differently than a TV.

Sample it, find filters, rewind and go.

As far as anything latter in the video, as they say, "I'll cross that bridge when I come to it".

Hit stop, sample again, rewind, go.

Gonna re-assemble everything later on anyway.
