  1. Well, I'm approaching hour #6 of formatting a DVD-RW using Nero's InCD. It is about 40% complete which means it will take over 6 hours to format the disk.

    a) Is it suppose to take this long?

    b) Is there other software that is better at handling DVD-RW's?

Here's what I want to do. Once a month I need to erase the old files on the DVD-RW and backup the current set of files to the DVD-RW. I've been using CD-R's and DVD-R's for this but over the past few years I have close to a hundred disks. I thought using a DVD-RW would be better. Any thoughts on how to do this so its faster?

    TIA
    Brent

I've never liked InCd as it seems to cause conflicts and problems whenever it's used.

One program that has worked for me is B's Clip6: http://www.bhacorp.com/products/clip6/clip6_retail.html

It's specifically made for RW media. Check to see if your burner is supported. It should not take more than 40 minutes to erase a DVD. It also has a quick format option that takes just a few minutes.

    12 hours is too looooong!

I have a dvd+rw and it takes 10 seconds to do a quick format. i think dvd-rw should only tyake about 2 minutes for a quick format. you can expect around 30-40 minutes for a full format. But 12 hours is not normal.

  4. Unfortunately B's clip6 does not support by Benq 1620 drive.

This may appear to be a silly question, but here goes. :P
Why can't I use Nero Burning Rom to burn directly to a DVD-RW? When I try, I get a burn error when it is half done.

Not an answer to your issue BUT what is your time worth?
blank dvd are in the range of .20 to .50 cents
    if you use a r/w disc you save ? 50cents or G?? forbid even a $1
why bother with r/w media, just backup on write once and discard the old backups that are concidered redundent.

Other software can format write once media for 'packet writing" in a matter of 1-3 minutes and can be used for drag & drop until finalized. InCd will only work with r/w media

Roxio direct to disc while incompatble with InCd is compatable with Nero burning and will handle write once media

  7. Ok, thanks guys. I am running up the white flag and giving up on RW's. After reading everyone else's problem with RW's I see that I am not alone. (Hey, I thought it was just me-NOT!) DVD-RAM's are too expensive so its back to good old DVD+R's.

Maybe DVD manufacturers and packet writing software makers need a good old class action lawsuit to smarten them up. It's like buying a car where the wheels fall off when you round a corner and the manufacturer says we're not liable 'cause it was mentioned in the owner's manual. We know we sell *hitty software, so live with it.
