    I'm even more unsure after research and reading the many previous posts on this topic.

    I wonder if there is a true "upgrade" for an old WinTV-FM (878 chip) capture card. I want to continue capturing uncompressed AVI and require no tuner capabilities. There must be at minimum composite and s-video inputs. No video out is required. Preference is to use VirtualDub and Huffyuv to cap. USA/NTSC

    I have a MyHD card for capturing ATSC which also has the capability of analog but unfortunately does an internal conversion/deinterlace rendering it inferior even to the WinTV.

    Any info on a hot new chip or clean card would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    golem

    Yes there is. Later Conexant solutions (10 and 12 bit ones) do have a far better picture.

    Also Philips chipset based capture cards, have an excellent picture (even if they are only 9-bit)

    bt8xx cards still do their job excellent through.

    The BTWINCAP drivers should get the most out of your BT878 card.
    I still use those drivers today with my old Pinnacle 848 card.

    Thanks guys for the replies!

    @SatStorm
    Thanks for the heads-up regarding the Conexant CX238** series. Further research seems to show the Leadtek Winfast Expert to be the card of choice in the 10 bit world. Stll unable to locate any non-hardware encoding cards with a 12 bit chip.

    Yup, you are so right! Have been using the BTWINCAP drivers since forever. It truly is a must for anyone able to use 'em.

    Additional opinions on card candidates cheerfully accepted.
