  1. I am new to video editing and authoring.

I've already figured out some basics: ripping to a hard drive, cropping and trimming, demuxing using DVD Lab Pro.

But I am totally lost on the concept of Encoding and what Encoders do.

Can anyone point me to a good article or guide???

    Thanks so much!!!

    Regards,
    Chris

  3. Okay, thanks. My video files have already been converted from .vob to .mpeg already. Does this mean I don't need to encode the video, if it's already in one of those formats??

    Thanks again!!

  4. P.S.

I also want to "enhance" some of these videos before burning them to a DVD.

Can an Encoder help with that??

    Thanks!

If you mean to improve the quality, if the source is not good to start with thats what you get. Or you could spend a lot of money on special hardware or time applying filters etc, for minimal results.

Generally no. The encoder's job is to compress the video. Sometimes, as a byproduct it might filter out a little noise, etc.

Most video editing programs have the ability to filter and enhance the video. But don't expect miracles.
