    Hello all.

I have recently purchased a new hard drive, a SATA Western Digital 160 GB. I have 1 PATA HD 80 GB and a DVD-R Teac DV-W50D.

I never had problems to burn DVD-R until the day i have purchased and instaled the SATA HD!

The IDE 1 i have the Primary HD 80gb and the Secondary Teac DV-W50D. I use Nero Burning Rom. I have burned a DVD movie, i have the source files in the SATA HD, but the movie wont play correctly!

Then i tried to move the source files to the 80GB HD and burned again and now the movie plays correctly!

Why is this append? I Dont understand...

In nero burning rom when i copy a DVD the Buffer shows the values 95 - 93 - 91!

    Can someone help?

Thanks and sorry by the bad english!!!

AFAIK, SATA doesn't use DMA. At least in my computer, only the SATA RAID controller is listed and you can see 'properties', but no DMA.

The 'Controladores SCSI e RAID' is your SATA listing and the controller is the next listing.

I don't think your problem is there in Device Manager settings. I don't know what is causing it, sorry.

EDIT: I had the same drive and on one of my computers, it just refused to work. Tried reformatting and even formating on a different computer. If I use it on one of my other computers, it works fine. It may be some strange problem with WD and certain SATA controllers, I don't know.

You might go to the WD website and see if they have any info in their FAQ, or look for an independent WD forum. If you have a problem with that drive, someone else may have it also and may have found a solution. I just gave up and use it on another computer and it works fine.

Try right clicking on the SATA controllers and click Uninstall. Restart windows and windows will reset(find) your SATA controllers again. it works for me when I have problems.

Is this burn a one time problem or does it happen all the time using your SATA drive. Did you try burning again using the SATA drive to see if the problem keeps repeating.

Every time the source files are in the SATA drive, the result is a bad DVD-R recording!!! If the source files are in the 80 GB Drive, that is the 1 ide master, the result is a great recorder DVD-R.

I'm thinking about change the boot and the Windows XP to the Ide 1 Primary, the 80 GB HD, and leave the SATA drive only to store data and backups! What do you think?

The HD SATA is more faster than the HD PATA (IDE)? (I think it is, but...) I only use the SATA as a boot because of speed... but i dont see any changes...

Anyone of you have a SATA as boot?

    Thanks all.

One of my systems has two sata drives with one as boot, and one for video editing. My Dell 8400 has no problems at all capturing or encoding video. Have to agree that it might be a driver issue.

Im a little confused as to why the problem occurs. There could be a number of possibilities. Sorry i cant help any further. I have 3 SATA drives and can burn perfectly with all three.

SATA is only theorectically faster, but you'll only notice the difference with 10,000 RPM drives.

  13. make sure is the right sata driver. reinstall it.
it could be your motherboard too.
if it's possible, try to install the drive into other system, see if it works, but I doubt it's a drive problem.

I never had any problem with sata.

Depending on the drivers you use for your sata drive, you might have write and read cache. Always have write cache enabled and try without read cache enabled. I think this will be driver dependant. I was wrong about dma for sata, it does not use it. My sata works fine for boot and everything else.

I think i solve the problem... Windows recognises my SATA HD! No driver problem! My motherborad too, Asus P4C800...

In HD configuration on motherboard i have:
    1st HD - SATA 160 GB
2nd HD - PATA 60 GB (Sorry i was wrong, not 80GB but 60 GB)
    3rd HD - PATA 40 GB

    In the IDEs I have
1st IDE Primary - PATA HD 60 GB
    1st IDE Secundary - Teac DV-W50D

2nd IDE Primary - PATA HD 40 GB
2nd IDE Secundary - Empty (No Power Left)

So when i have to copy something i just put the source files in the PATA HD 60 GB!

    Thank you all...

I'd recommend replacing the SATA cable. Between the buffer jumping, and the data irregularities, I'd say something is probably screwy with the data cable.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to check SATA Controller's manufacturer's site to see if there's a BIOS upgrade for the SATA controller.
