  1. I thought I did everything right. I had the Video VCR set up to record as MPEG-2 Best Quality. It saved the whole thing. Then I tried to open it, and Winamp thought it was an audio file (since fixed it so that it doesn't try to automatically open with Winamp now). The extension that it saved down to as was MP2. As I have not done this very much, does it sound like it saved as an MPEG-2. Tried a few programs to open it so that I could edit it, and I get that is in an invalid format.

As I am a rooking on this stuff I was wondering if I could get some help.

I have a Satellite and VCR feed coming into the card. I also have a DVD-Rom that I need to figure out how to rip from. I am looking for the simplest way of capturing and ripping, and converting to SVCD and VCD. As I don't know which ones will play on my DVD-player, I need to experiment with both still.

Also, most of what I am ripping is going to be subtitled as I love anime. Which program works best with subtitles? I have read the sight pretty thoroughly, and want to know you guys think of all these different methods available.

    Thanks for the help

I have a similar set up that works like a charm. First off, what CPU are you using? I've found that because ATI and Intel are friendly toward each other, it's best to use Intel Pentium chips instead of the AMDs that people like in their game computers. A friend has a 1.2 GHz AMD and gets nothing but frame drops in his captures. I have a 1 GHz Pentium III and only get frame drops when writing to the Hard Drive (slowest part of the system). If you want to just rip DVDs, I can't help you there. I can afford to buy all my DVDs so ripping is unnecessary. Don't use the native software that ATI gives you for capturing. I use Virtual Dub and have had no problems capturing to 352 X 240 29.97fps NTSC. Convert to MPEG1 or MPEG2 with TMPEGenc. Some people here have problems with this software but (so far) I've had none. You can also cut or merge files with TMPEGenc since I have to do this on clips posted to usenet. For all the people having problems, all I can say is to look at your setup. If it's AMD, you may have problems. If it's not an ASUS MB, you may have problems. Going the cheap route is not always the successful route...
