  1. I have been successful with this method, until recently.
My latest transfer copied everything I needed and I even let it record to its capacity. The problem now, is I can play this on my ILO recorder only. I cant open it on my PC, its not even detected?!

I also made sure I finalized the disc so it can be played on other machines. But still it cant open anywhere else.

Does anyone know a trick? I no longer have the vhs, so re-doing it will not be an option.

There are different formats which you can record and finalize. Perhaps you chose the wrong format.

yes, I've done that with the same result. you must have about 1 minute left on the dvdr so it can finalize. total time is about 2:04. stop the recording at 2:03 and all will work. I know what you're thinking...cannot do UNATTENDED recordings. just walk away for 2 hours, come back and stop the recording.

  7. I tried to read it with Decrypter but it wont even show up on the file browser, invalid disc, no disc inserted etc.

Sorry, I forgot or am away from home so I cant check on the model number. But it was $149 at walmart last year.

I had a feeling it didnt finalize

  8. What model are "we" referring to?
could be the 04 or 05. in this case it doesn't matter; the disc did not finalize.

I've tried getting the data back with a number CD-DVD recovery tools and no luck. ISOBuster tried and was going to take all night so I stopped it. Just made another dvd from the tape and in 2 hours had a FINALIZED working copy. sorry you no longer have the VHS tape. I would let ISOBuster run all night in this case. good luck. There is also a new freeware program named DVDisaster v0.63 you might try. It tries to insert new error correction codes to a defective DVDR (a new copy on your hard drive I suppose). will try to get a link for this prog later. Actually it's here in this forum.

    OR

since you can play it back on the recorder, hook up the recorder to the input of a vcr or camcorder and make a NEW TAPE of the dvdr. take that NEW TAPE and make a good, FINALIZED dvdr. good luck.

IF you have the ILO dvdr04 I KNOW what you are going through.
Here's how not to go through it again.
    1. Use dvd+rw, any speed seems to work fine.
    2. Using the osd button, ALWAYS erase them, even the new ones. Yes, this matters.
    3. Record a small amount of anything, (3 seconds is fine). This makes it more compliant for some reason; no, I don't understand why.
    4. Now use your recorder as you want.
I guarantee that DVDdecrypter will read the resulting disc in ISO read mode. Pack header warnings can be ignored.
    5. Mount the resulting file in Daemon tools.
    6. DVDshrink will reauthor the virtual dvd fairly quickly, and with the option to do some rudimentary editing. Notice that your junk file is invisible in DVDshrink.
Use the save as ISO option.
    7. Burn with DVDdecrypter using DVD+R bitset to DVDrom.

This is how I convert my old video tapes to dvds and have had good results.
The resulting dvds have no menu but play in everything I have tried them in. 8)

Edit1 I let it run out of room routinely with DVD+rw, w/o any consequences. DVD+rw don't require finalizing.
