When compressing a movie using DVD Shrink, is the bitrate changed as well? I know Shrink does Interframe as well as Intraframe analysis but I don't understand how or if this affects the overall bitrate.

  2. It would have to depending on dvd length and media size used.

There's a thread at Doom9 that gives the "nuts n bolts" description of exactly how DVDShrink does its magic.

    EDIT:

It might actually be at digital-digest. I can't remember exactly now.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Quite simply it has to. Aside from removing extras and alternate tracks, the only way to "shrink" a movie is to cut it shorter or lower the bitrate.

  7. DVDShrink and all transcoders remove unneeded/repeated data from the GOP.
    Here's a decription from afterdawn.com:

"Transcoding or more specifically Compressed-domain Transcoding means normally a re-encoding process that changes the video or audio features, such as resolution or bitrate, by changing parts of the a/v content, but not by reconstructing the content again (which is the case in encoding process). Compressed-domain transcoding also maintains the format of the file same as in the original file."

Transcoding is sometimes confused with encoding.Encoding usually involves changing from one format to another(eg. AVI->MPEG).

EDIT:you guys beat me to it.
