  1. Hello,

When capturing and restoring video I would like to hook up a calibrated video monitor. My concern is not to degrade the incoming analog video signal to my capture card before it gets converted to digital. I do not want to use the composite out of the proc amp to feed the monitor. I would prefer to use the much higher quality S-video connection to feed my video monitor, as I will be making assessments and corrections to the video image using this monitor. Which of the following two methods would offer the best signal to my capture card while still being able to monitor and assess the incoming analog video?

Both methods will be using S-Video inputs and outputs through out:

    METHOD 1
    JVCSVHS VCR>
    TBC>
    PROC AMP>
Then pass the anlog video signal through a high quality video monitor's
S-video input, and then use the monitor's S-video output for my capture card.

    METHOD TWO
    JVCSVHS VCR>
    TBC>
    PROC AMP>
Then pass my analog video through a distribution amp like this one:

I can then feed both my monitor and capture card through the distribution amp's multiple S-Video outputs.

Will one of the two above methods offer a better quality analog signal to my capture card.

    Thanks as always

I would not recommend Method 1.
I was testing the loopthru performance of my TV/Monitor with a scope recently, and it was pretty bad; H Sync was noticeably distorted. I was surprised, but it is a consumer product after all.
I am sure that this will vary from Monitor to Monitor, but why send your capture signal through additional signal stages?

The distribution amp you reference would probably be a better choice.

I just use a composite feed to my Monitor as I find it sufficient for making proc amp adjustments to the video image. That way I can feed the S-Video output of my TBC/Proc Amp directly to my Hauppauge 250.
