Newcomer: Interpreting file names

I have a DVD I recorded with two 'titles' on it. IOW, the initial menu has two choices. After copying it to my HD I see these files:

VIDEO_TS.BUP 12 KB BUP File
VIDEO_TS.IFO 12 KB Nero ShowTime File
VIDEO_TS.VOB 74 KB VOB File
VTS_01_0.BUP 16 KB BUP File
VTS_01_0.IFO 16 KB Nero ShowTime File
VTS_01_1.VOB 142,148 KB VOB File
VTS_02_0.BUP 16 KB BUP File
VTS_02_0.IFO 16 KB Nero ShowTime File
VTS_02_1.VOB 126,526 KB VOB File

I see that the VOB files contain the two respective videos, and I can play them with a player of my choice. But what are the other 6 files?

If I d-click any of the 3 IFO files, it opens (by association) in Nero ShowTime, and I see what appears to be the initial menu, identical in each case. So why are there 3 of these? And what is the content of the BUP files please? I don't seem able to open them, and there is no Open With command from a r-click.

. BUP = Backup files of the IFO files.

. IFO = The IFO files includes information such as chapters, subtitle tracks and audio tracks.

. VOB = The VOB files contains the actual video,audio,subtitles and menus.
