I'm trying to change my digital video files into having a CBR instead of VBR.
I'd load it in virtual dub, click Audio>Full Processing Mode>Audio Compression>No Compression PCM.
    File>Save WAV.
Reopen Virtual dub then id go Audio>WAV Audio (Find the audio and click ok)
    Audio>Full Pocessing Mode>Compression>Mpeg Layer-3 (56 kb/s)
    Video>Direct Stream Copy.
    File>Save AVI.

Now looing at the result sound seems a few secs out of sync, why?

56k? Bit low I would say. Also why decompress then re-compress when you could do it in one go?

Also why exactly are you converting to CBR? Most players, etc. handle VBR just fine.

Could also try mencoder. Something like:
    mencoder.exe -ovc copy -oac mp3lame -lameopts cbr:br=128 input.avi -o output.avi

  3. Well what ever your trying to accomplish in the audio department, a few to many steps. Jus open up video file, go to streams list, select audio at full processing and pick your 56kbs audio and do your video at direct stream.
    Quality is my policy.

There is a reason im changing to a constant bitrate and that is, because i heard that a VBR audio has more chance of falling out of synch than a CBR.
I will try Mencoder thanks for the advice mate.

Norman - Would this need to be done on virtual dub or virtual dub mod?
In order to make a CBR i saved it as an Uncompressed WAV.
    Then loaded in the Audio.
By doing what you've said (looking like it could be done on vdub mod) would i
    A: Get a CBR?
B: Not get sound out of sync?

    Cheers fellas.

When you load the video into virtualdub and it asks if you want to rewrite the headers, so no. Then save out as a CBR mp3 file and save yourself the time.

Actually, most decent players will keep sync playing back vbr mp3 audio. It is only when it comes time to convert to DVD that vbr really becomes a headache. If you are keeping them as avi, don't waste your time.
