    Hello out there,

to the initiated it may seem ridiculous, but I have started recently to use Vegas on my VHS captures. My problem: I started a new project, played around a bit with FX effects and now the effect seems to be "burned-in", that is (it is the pan/crop function) although
    - I closed the project without saving,
    - removed the reference-files for the respective video-files (*.sfk-extension)
    - even cleared "prerendered files" to make sure (in fact I hadn't done any)
    - and started a new project, the panning/cropping in the respective files is still retained! The original files are unchanged, but I cannot remove this setting... How come? What do I have to change, delete, set-up?
Strange - and I couldn't find any hint in the online-help-file. Perhabs I would find something, if I knew exactly what term to look for...

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Other then that I really dont understand the problem? can you take a screen Cap of it?

That's pretty curious. Go into Preferences, General and unclick "Automatically open last project on startup". That should start Vegas without loading a project. Then start a brand new project from scratch. Other than that, I'm trying to duplicate the behavior that you've observed and so far I haven't been successful.

If you have already done a lot of editing, and therefore don't want to start the project fro scratch, you are going to have to check every track and clip level event FX, track motion setting until you find the culprit

Great, getting so many answers in that short interval. Here goes:

I DID disable the "Automatically start last project on start-up", I DID start my project from scratch, 4 times at least, but the problem remains... I deleted the *.sfk-extensions, etc. I tried the Strg+Shift during start-up, but the problem remains. (Have to check yet, if settings are back to default...) Is there any other cache or something, that I should delete to start really and truly from scratch? I opened a new project this morning (over here it is 9 am.) - and - s.a.

[EDIT: for ease of use I changed the image to smaller version]

  9. You are talking about the Tittle Safe area and action Safe.? This is normal.

No, I don't mean those nice little white dotted lines. It is the black border left and right, I do not get it with the other files and did not get it in the first place...

Shall I include an additional screenshot of the "un"-bordered file(s)? Or try Sony's customer-support...is it a bug, perhabs...?

    (Last two posts were crossing...)

Also: in this same project the added files are sometimes shown with and sometimes without that border.

Sorry, don't get your meaning . You mean the 'bug'-idea? Not to worry about it?

  16. Set the right settings and you wont see this. Also when you render out just make sure to set the right Aspect Ratio.

I did, only as I am in PAL-land, I would chose the PAL-settings...
By the way, thanks for taking the time and trouble!

So these borders are just there for "fun"...? I wanted to add borders ultimately, to correct the TV-overscan slightly. BUT I want to see and add them when I like...

  18. You wont see the Overscan when Played on a TV.

They are there because of your Project settings. Title Safe and Action safe are there for other reasons, Captions,Lower Thirds and other things.

    I know.
I mean, "see" them on Vegas's screen, add them there the way I want, as I already worked out I HAVE to add small borders, to prevent too much overscan, after capturing my VHS-movies and burning them to DVD.

I'd like to get this clear: I don't mind those white dotted lines, at all, I know how to turn them on/off. I mean the borders on the left and right of the video, with some files they are there, with some they are not, and in the same video-track/same project! 8)

    Worked it OUT!!!

Right-clicking on the file IN the track brings up another window, under the "Media"-tab you may set the properties of the file, like this:
Here you see the setting for the "bordered"-version:

I'll presently include the second file for the "un"-bordered version - and @canadateck: you were right in a sense, only it is NOT the project-properties, but the FILE-properties, that have to b changed.
Anyway, thanks for all the help.

What is the resolution of the captured file ?
If you have the top and bottom borders in the capture file (which I suspect you do), Vegas may have to pillar box to make it fit your selected project resolution. Perhaps you need to just zoom in some to fill out the screen.

Personally, I believe this file doesn't need to be adjusted for overscan, as you would not have seen the ends on your VHS version anyway, so you are not actually missing anything by leaving it as it (assuming you fix this current issue).

Well, I had try-outs with previous captures, adding small black borders and not adding them, and on my TV it defnitely makes a difference. My "point-of-reference" is the station's logo. The VHS version (watched with VCR) displays that logo more or less at the exact position it is displayed during broadcast. But my DVDs had this very noticable difference, the logo having moved very near the outside (or even partly 'moved into' oblivion) of the TV-screen. *
So far I used AviSynth to add small borders and resize the orginal 720x576-capture (PAL) to something smaller, make borders of ~ 20 pixels wide - and I am happy.

I try Vegas, because I think the color correction-filters are more extensive, and I like to see the effects on this capture.

["What is the resolution of the captured file ?" -> 720x576]

    * This makes for a strange effect in close-ups, when movie is scanned/panned by the broadcasting station and with the overscan poeple's faces get really quite large on the TV screen...

If you have an mpeg encoder that you like (eg. Procoder or CCE) which do does not have a vegas plugin, check out the frameserver at debugmode. It allows you to frameserve out of vegas (like avisynth frameserves) to any encoder that can read a frameserver file. Very handy, and free.

Thanks, I tried that out already, really nice piece of work, but with the project I just started, it would have taken about 30 hours to frameserve/render the file from Vegas>DebugMode Frameserver>Canopus ProCoder 2.

For the time being I am yet looking for a faster possibility - correcting the colors as is possible in Vegas, use ProCoder and still finish the project in a reasonable time... I like AviSynth very much, but have not yet found the wealth of color correcting features I found in Vegas.

Perhabs I'll post in the AviSynth-forum about this.
