  1. Just taped a movie off television, and am now ready to burn it to dvd. I've taped it as one long mpeg2 file, in WINDVD version 7, using DVD (lp) Long play mode, which allows me to burn about 180 minutes of video to DVD.

Shut down WINDVD and now have opened Nero Vision Express 3.0. Drag the movie file from my D: Drive into the compilation window and this is what I get:::

The file "changing lanes.mpg" is larger then 2GB and therefore cannot be stored in an iso file system. Please use the UDF File system to write such large files. This can be done by selecting another compilation type.

    Actual file size is 3,348,888,616.

Notice the only UDF discs that can be burned with Nero are DATA discs. Can these be read by Stand alone DVD players. Just want to share the movie around with my friends, who as well just want to play it on their dvd players.

Have had a look at a number of programs to break up large mpeg files, but these seem to be in their early stages, and seem to be very fidley to use, (many steps, just to chop one piece up). Apparently mpeg2 is not an edit friendly format, so i've learned

    Any help much appreciated Thanks.

Are your drives FAT32? If yes, then that's your answer. I believe you need drives formated to NTFC to be able to work with files larger than 2 gigs. Time to install Win 2000 or XP.

jtoolman2000 - Actually, it is NTFS, not NTFC.

And the error is accurate. UDF file system must be used for files over 2GB. However, most authoring programs put the audio/video into vob files of 1GB each.

All you need is a DVD Authoring program, which will ensure the file meets dvd specs, make any conversion if necessary, split the file up into vob's, and burn it. If Nero is attempting to convert the file into DVD format, then I don't know why you are getting the error.

A DVD-VIDEO disc is pretty just a DVD Data disc with AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, and maybe a JACKET_P folder, or DVD-ROM content. If you burn a dat disc as UDF/ISO, you should be fine. You'll probably get a warning about DVD video compliance, just click ok.

  5. yeah, I know, Win ME is holding me back to 4 GB files, hence the reason why I'm looking at getting a new computer over the next month or so. (my current computer can't handle avi files, due to their huge size) So you reckon another restriction of ME is that it can only burn files up to 2 GIG?

I could burn it as a data disc as you said by chopping the file into video and audio and placing the files into the respective AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, but the original file is just one mpg file. And Nero won't let me get past this error message. When I hit O'kay, the compilation window just shuts down, and it goes back to the wizzard.

So there's no other DVD authoring program that will get me past this 2 GIG barrier? or is this just another strangle-hold of FAT32.

Also if I just burn the movie mpg onto a disc, as a data disc, stand alone dvd players can still read this?

    Thanks.

It's not a FAT32/NTFS thing (the file-size restriction is 4GB with FAT32), and it's not a WinME thing. It's an ISO file-system thing. The 2GB restriction applies to all computers, because it is a restriction of the ISO file-system you're trying to burn it with. As Nero says, you can create a disc using the UDF file-system and you don't have this barrier. On any computer.

Whether a raw MPEG will play on your settop DVD player or not depends on your player - some can, AFAIK, most don't.

My advice ? Author your MPEG. This will split it into 1GB VOB files.

    ... or buy the DVD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Thanks everyone for the advice, finally found the right tool in nero to burn a movie dvd. For some reason, Nero has two DVD burning programs, within the same program which makes things very confusing. The program you get to from the quick start pop-up screen is different, then the one you get, when you just click on start>nero>nerovision. Strange why nero would do this, but if anyone else is having DVD Authoring problems, tell them to start their nerovisionexpress from the start menu, rather then from the pop-up screen menu.

  8. I have used Nerovision but when I add two files (.avi) from one movie it processes okay but will stall in my DVD player when it switches to the second file. I have also problems with fast forward on my DVD player which will only work at one speed. If I try to increase the speed the player will reset to zero minutes. Do I need to merge my files first or should Nero vision do that when creating a movie.
