  1. Does anyone know of some sort of workaround to get this device recognized by something other than the software that comes with it? Thanks...

Sorry, but you are stuck with the software they bundled. Because it is a USB device, nothing will recognize it like is done with a Firewire setup. I had one and had to send ot back for a refund. I got a Canopus AVDC-100 and a firewire card and now I capture analog video with no problems at all and can use any 3rd party apps like TMPGenc.

  4. The AVC-2200 has had two different chipsets if I recall correctly. One was by Conexant and the other, Broadcom. The Broadcom chipset is the older one which would work with Movie Mill capture software. Movie Mill version 2.0.260 was available for free download from the Emuzed web site. Emuzed seems to be the actual manufacturer of the Adaptec. The AVC-2200 works with most versions of Sonic MyDVD. I have version 6 Deluxe which has editing, menu and chapter creation, burning, and capture ability.

Personally I prefer Movie Mill for capture because it allows you to do some color correction as well then I use MyDVD for editing, creating chapters, and burning. Here is what mine looks like inside,

It is held together by a single screw underneath the serial number sticker on the bottom. It was recently tested for performance against some very recent dvd recorders on this thread and did better than expected.

[edit] If you need drivers, they are available for download on the Adaptec web site the last time I looked.
