  1. Hi. I picked up a 1693s last week and decided to try my hand at reviewing it, to give back to the DVD community perhaps. Here's the link:
    http://www.convertingvideo.com/1693s/

8 CDs, 12 DVD-Rs, 1 DVD+R, 2 DVD+RW, and 1 DVD+DL tested. With disc quality and transfer rate scans on all media. This is the media I have kept to test with so it's all 1-8x (what a lot of us use anyway). A lot of the reviews on current writers sidestep this media so I hope you find the review helpful. Please let me know if you find any errors or have any other constructive criticism.

Thanks for the review. This is the burner I got after the suden death of my old NEC 2500. Here in CR there are not many options and this one was (I think) the best option at the time.

  3. Nice work, QuaiBoy....

It's a good offering from Liteon. I like mine. If my 451S ever dies, I won't be so glum....I'll only miss the CD burning quality.

There is a new firmware for the Liteon SOHW-1693S listed at The Firmware Page. The latest version is KS0B but there is not a description of what was improved, according to the Lite-on web page it just add support for more media. Maybe this new firmware has a better DL support.

There is a detailed post on this matter at cdfreaks: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=152205

KS0B was not that good . Sony DRU800 KY06 is a a lot better, but the best of all is codeguys´ KC4B

If you want the best possible burns with a 1693S or a DRU800 use KC4B firmware and you will be pleased.
