  1. I am trying to back up a commercial DVD. It gets about 1 minute into it and comes up with a series of error messages.

"Read failed for 512 blocks at 8192"
"Mirror of Title set 1 failed"
    "Mirrir is DVD failed"

I also tried with DVD backup and there was an error message on that program too. I actually watched the DVD on my computer first, so I know all the 'keys' are there. Also MacTheRipper detected Disc RCE, I dunno if that has anything to do with it. I have the RCE Region set to RCE 1. I also have De-Macro on. I am a newbie so I don't know what all of these things mean, but I know it has worked in the past.

    Any suggestions?

    version of Mac The Ripper?
Sounds like there might be dirt on the DVD.
Did you try cleaning it first?
I've found that in the past this has done wonders
to get past block read errors......

following that, you may want to go
over to the Mac The Ripper Forum
    and download the newest version
    ( via donation).

  3. I downloaded the new version. On the program it is saying there are bad sectors. But its getting past them and now its back to normal. Hopefully my DVD will play ok. Not sure though if it found bad sectors...

EDIT: Also...with MacTheRipper do you have to watch each scene for a few seconds like it says in the Walk-Thru or is that just with DVD Backup?

i'm using v 2.6.6 and i never had to watch any part of the disc before ripping.

i've had a couple problems burning discs after ripping with MTR, but got round that in the end. if your a newbie (like me) check my post on burning, it's called "video ts folders to large to burn". might be of use

You would then process the MTR rip with a re-quantumizer like
DVD2ONEX ( or, possibly Popcorn) to a new
VIDEO-TS folder , that you would burn in Toast.
    Should be fine....

Make sure you've set your DVD drive's region by playing a commercial DVD with DVD Player.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

  7. I know how to compress it and all that. I've just never seen that bad sector thing before.

How would I check the region on the DVD player?

when you put in the first commercial DVD of your choice,
and then play it using Apple's DVD player,
if you have never played a DVD before it will
prompt you to set the region of your drive.

so say for instance if you've watched Spider-Man
that you picked up at Wal-mart/Best Buy, then
it would be set for Region 1.

If you did this why are you not asking for help in the MTR forum?

You have to be a member of the MTR forum to get the newest download unless you found it somewhere else?

Yes but 3.0 has been working flawless on the newer movies.
