Burner fail to burn either +/- media?

Anybody else experience this?

I have two DVD Burners that have each decided they no longer like either + or - media.

The first, and NEC 1300 decided it will not burn - (minus) media now.

The other an IO Magic (Optorite) DD0401 no longer will verify + (plus) Media.
(It will burn, but will not verify, disks show no read errors with dvdinfo)

All software is current, Nero, and DVD Decryptor both experience this problem.
Tried with different media in both cases, different speeds, etc.

Is it possible for only one 'side' to fail?
Are there two different lasers, one for each media type?

There is a read laser and a write laser, and AFAIK, 2 more for CD read, write.

You likely have more than one problem there. Have you tried cleaning the laser lens? You can start with 'canned air' to see if it helps; If so, a cleaning disc or better a foam Q-tip and some denatured alcohol. Keep the Q-tip damp, not wet and change often.
