  1. I just picked up an HP laptop, er I mean, Notebook. I have been removing all of the crap that these proprietary systems come with but there is a folder called SWSetup (I assume it means SoftWare Setup) and I don't know if I should delete it or just delete the things that I know I won't use.

    Any have any info?

I'm using a HP laptop, ZE4101. I agree about the crap from HP. The problem for me is, if you try to install XP without the supplied discs, the computer runs really slow. It has a HP diagnostic partition on the HD, but I don't think that's the problem.

Anyway, I gave up on trying to put the regular XP OS on it. Just never worked as well as the HP install. I unfortunately live with the crap, though I disabled most of it in the OS.

Never heard of SWsetup. I did a search and at least at that level, I can't find it. Try deleting it. If you still have the HP install discs, you can always get back to the original OS

  3. I think I didn't explain enough...The folder is c:\swsetup. I think it uses that in lieu of a partition or a setup disc. I don't think anything runs from this folder, just a bunch of folders containing software that you can install.

    The laptop I bought is a dv4150.

I'm not looking to reinstall XP or anything, I just want to know what is safe to remove. (I usually build my own pc but you just can't do that with a laptop...)

You can delete the folder if you want.

I recently bought a Compaq Notebook that had the same folder in the C: Root Directory. I actually wanted to partition my HDD, so I reinstalled XP from the provided Instalation disks. I then installed only the S/W that I wanted. I also cleaned up XP by turning off uneeded processes.

The result is I have my two partitions and XP runs nice and clean.

    * edit, If you're nervous, you can burn the folder to a dvd just to be safe.

Just move the folder to another partition or burn it on a CD or DVD. Use the notebook for some time and check if there are problems while running.
I think it's the best way to know if anything laying there is in use.
